It’s a shame you were fired, but APM and other NPR affiliated news media outlets are some of the last that continue to stand by their public facing “Objective Journalism”.

In the ethics policy they say:

Conflict of interest

An ethics policy can’t cover everything. The general principle is this: Outside activities by news staff should not compromise the impartiality of Marketplace’s journalism.

Kai Ryssdal may hold somewhat strong personal opinions on economics on his personal pages, but he is also tenured. One of the seemingly worst and unfair parts of breaking into journalism or any business is proving your worth. Your tenure was less than a year and the post that got you let go was one that said “Journalists should not be objective.” While I do think it’s the responsibility of journalists to investigate and find the truth, there’s absolutely no reason this can’t be done objectively.

NPR’s impartiality is the reason it has continued to be one of the most trusted news sources. There’s a point to be made about diversity within media, but it’s also one that can be made objectively. If you feel the need to educate your audience, take to a pseudonym. “But hiding behind a name…” Hiding behind a pseudonym gives you clearance when saying “Journalists shouldn’t be objective” while reporting for outlets that say they should.

I’m sorry you were let go, but at least now you have an opportunity to pursue the type of reporting you want to do.
