Roter Sturm overlooking Vienna

Vienna wine hike combines two great activities, hiking in beautiful vineyards and drinking wine. Even though it was already the eleventh edition of this event, I have not heard about it until last year. This year I had the time and it was great.

For those of you, who are unware of Vienna’s connection to wine: the city has a sizeable production of primarily white wines and the vineyards all around the outer districts are reachable by public transportation and a bit of walking

We started off in Neustift am Walde, having our first sturm — very fresh and new wine, which is usally very sweet — at Heuriger Fuhrgassl-Huber. Afterwards we continued through the vineyards, occasionally climbing surprisingly steep paths and passing many small stands selling wine and food. Unsurprisingly and given the very warm and sunny weather, there were huge crowds everywhere and a lot of families attempting the wine hike with a stroller — I found it exhausting enough just walking, I am not even imagining pushing a stroller through the hills.

We continued onwards through Sievering all the way to Grinzing, trying out the local delicacies at several stands until the sun set. Our last stop took us to a Heuriger in Nussdorf, where we had a hard earned dinner.

All in all, it was a great event and if the weather is nice, I would definitely do it again next year but maybe try one of the other routes through Ottakring or in the 21st district.
