What Is It About Reading?

From Shelf to shelf and now device to device things are always moving in various directions. How should we organise all this clutter?

As writers we all wish to start writing orally, the voice is an amazing thing. Having a voice activated machine to speak like we read would be great. Two things hearing those voices in the head would carry a lot less weight than a brick wall.

I am sure there are plenty of them about. Typing is an activity that involves the hands. This is something we cannot escape, unless your an avid user of Google glass, I am not up to date on all this technology so please do not quote me on this. Besides it has nothing to do with things on the readers end. In this post I will try and answer two simple questions: What is it about reading and how should we organise literature? In an day and age where media converges the dust still needs to be maintained. And like a library there is going to be some movement. So lets prepare for the inevitable.

The memories of early texts shape our thoughts and behaviours, creativity is bound by two way conversations. A book that speaks to an audience would be offensive thats why its good to think of a Shakespeare. I think it was Othello who spoke to a skulls head to find his voice.

Some of us are passive others actively engaged. We read to draw upon our own conclusions. Arguably reading original texts in a language we understand in the context of technology is still I’m hoping you’ll agree is still all a bit ‘Star Trek’.

Depending on what planet your from or which solar system dragged you in I hope to stay focused and answer a couple of questions I had before writing here on Medium. We do not understand language from foreign or alien countries unless we take the time to study a book. I do not like language derivation however I am British and we do have a reputation around the world for not making much effort to learn new languages. Whilst studying language I recieved various methods to analyse texts and through briefly studying literature I noticed how passionate readers were about texts.

So how can this help organise all those books we have? Or are you one of those people who get a book then pass it on? I am sure one way or another you are. I imagine there are even people who have spent over an hour over the phone or Skype telling someone how good a book is.

Maybe even some of these people do not care about storage, prefer to keep things minimal and pass on every book they read through direct mail.

In America I believe they now have drones to deliver parcels such as these.

Remote devices to deliver books from the wharehouse to peoples homes. I wonder after purchasing can you sell books second hand and get the same delivery service.

It does not matter really if its on paper, in PDF format or live on a website if you get it wrong then its all going to seem like verbal …….

Reading is shaped by common principles. Not limited by alpha letters attributed with the ‘ground in’ phonological sounds attributed with speech.

Reading and writing similarly is fuelled by awareness, you have to be awake, I mean a good cup of coffee can really help. Unlike conversations I find text can make me nod off.

Audio texts are a way of overcoming this.

Sometimes I just want to read to finish.

If you are reading this and have concerns its OK its just me I am not speaking for everybody.

There are people I know who can speed read. I have even looking into phonics as a way of associating words to remember what it is. These are symbolic signs in the head that help us shelve stuff.

I have not yet managed to develop this skill though. In fact I have this teaching on a cassette.

The problem is no one seems to use cassettes anymore, neither do I.

Like I say I studied mainly English Language and not English literature. At the time I was a big fan of poetry and music. Music is always there, I have a lot of gratitude for both poetry and music. However since the rise of technology and blogging I have gotten lost in my own world.

I hope to kick back, go through what I treasure and surround myself with this and some other nice company.

Then clear out clutter since I am not yet one to give books away after reading. And no I am not a hoarder or a trekkie. I am just making a point of things.

The reality is books come in all shapes and sizes. Equally sentences and paragraphs are used in all sorts of ways. Its easy to be seen as convoluted or go into to much detail about simple things. I promised you I would answer the two questions. I am sorry, I failed. However I will come back here to Medium and update you on the latest blurbs.
