Red Planet: How We’ll Govern Mars
Tom O'Bedlam

The modern state of Israel was started by agricultural communes called Kibbutzim. They eventually died off because all the kids wanted to leave the collectives and move to the cities for more opportunity. I think that communes will be how the colony will start but once it’s economy starts to diversify it might become something more like “socialism with Martian characteristics” (nod to China).

If economic development doesn’t come easily, a Mars colony might be like the Argentinian settlements in Antarctica. Technically they’re permanent settlements with schools and hospitals but they’re basically just there to be there. Argentina’s government pays to support them for ideological reasons. We could totally have a colony just for the feels.
