I don’t think Umair Haque is suffering from boredom as much as he’s suffering from depression. He says he’s “Desperately & totally bored.” I believe he thinks that’s true, but if you’re desperate for something, you’re not bored. Boredom is about not being interested in anything & desperation is about being agitated & feeling like things are hopeless. It is possible to be happy without being in denial of the suffering of the world. In face, you are always aware of the suffering; you just aren’t wallowing in it! As for that thing about happiness becomes suffering & suffering happiness & all is lost, that a statement of this man’s feeling of hopelessness, an admission that he’s bought into the nihilism of our times.
