Pretty sure this is just a straw man. E.g. where I work, they want to collect engine data, shove it in Hadoop and use it predict when a vehicle needs to be maintained, which is designed to 1) save money (because you don’t service until you need to) and 2) reduce failures (because you don’t service after something’s broken).

Sounds pretty problem-driven to me. Doesn’t get you onto Hacker News, though :-)
