The Daily Thistle — News From Scotland

Monday 10th July 2017

“Madainn Mhath” …Fellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to you…. It seems the humidity I spoke of yesterday is with us again this morning, very sticky as Bella and I walk the lanes of Estepona.. even at 4am it’s warm.. maybe it’s the heat from the Fun Fair that’s in town and who’s raucous music can be heard pulsating in just about every corner of this normally quiet town.. as you can tell from writing I can’t stand all the noise, especially at 4am.. Spain or should I say the Spanish way of life is noisy, the car horn is used for just about everything from attracting the attention of someone living on the top floor of an apartment block to waving to a friend or work mate as they drive down the street.. and the radio in the car… has two volumes Loud as possible and Off, there is no in-between.. enough said, where’s the coffee??

TIMED TO PERFECTION…. WATCHES WORTH £500,000 STOLEN IN RAID AT GLENEAGLES….. Dozens of Rolex watches worth more than £500,000 were stolen during an armed robbery at Gleneagles Hotel, police have confirmed. At least 50 designer watches were taken during the raid on a jewellery boutique inside the hotel last week. Officers said staff at the store were threatened with a firearm during the robbery but no shots were fired. Det Ch Insp Andy Patrick appealed for help in tracing the men responsible for the “particularly alarming crime”. The details of the robbery at the Mappin and Webb store emerged in a police press conference. He said the trio, who wore dark clothing and had their faces partially covered, entered the hotel at 11:00. Police have appealed for help from pawnbrokers and shopkeepers who may be offered the watches They fled the grounds in a dark blue Audi which was later abandoned near Auchterarder. Police said they “strongly believed” they left the Perthshire town in a Range Rover Evoque. Det Ch Insp Patrick, who is leading the investigation, said officers believe the three men involved in the robbery may have had assistance from others.
He added: “Our extensive enquiries so far have established that the Audi car which was abandoned in the Auchterarder area was stolen from the Kent area in June. “The two door grey-coloured Range Rover Evoque was stolen from the London area in May.

WHISKY A GO GO!… WHISKY-FUELLED CAR MAKES FIRST JOURNEY…. The world’s first car running on a biofuel made from whisky residue has had its first successful test drive. The fuel, called biobutanol, is designed as a direct replacement for petrol and diesel and does not need the car to have its engine modified. It is made from kernels of barley called draff, and pot ale — a yeasty liquid left over from fermentation. BBC Scotland reporter Lisa Summers was behind the wheel for the car’s first-ever journey using the whisky biofuel.
She said the car felt smooth on the short drive — and did not notice any difference from a petrol or diesel-fuelled vehicle.
While there is a push for major car manufacturers to commit to electric vehicles, biobutanol is seen by its inventors as an alternative which can power the vehicle without the need to modify its engine. It was created by Celtic Renewables Ltd, a spinout company from Edinburgh Napier University, which worked with Perthshire’s Tullibardine Distillery on the project.

STRICKEN SCALLOP DREDGER TOWED TO SAFETY OFF EYEMOUTH…. A scallop dredger has been towed to safety after suffering engine failure off the Borders coast. Eyemouth RNLI lifeboat was called out to the incident at about 14:40 on Thursday. The Leith-registered scallop dredger, Immanuel IV, and its three crew, had suffered engine failure to the south of Eyemouth. It was towed back to safety by the dive vessel Oceanic. The lifeboat escorted both vessels back to harbour.

FLUSHED WITH SUCCESS… BORDERS COLLEGE SEWAGE HEATING SYSTEM UP FOR AWARD…. A project which sees waste water from a sewer used to power a heating system on a college campus has been shortlisted for an ecological award. The SHARC energy recovery system was officially launched at Borders College in Galashiels in 2015. It provides 95% of the heating on the joint higher and further education campus. It is one of four contenders in the best newcomer category at the Green Gown Awards. They recognise “exceptional sustainability initiatives” being undertaken by universities and colleges across the world.

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW ROLLS INTO FLOORS CASTLE NEAR KELSO…. Antiques Roadshow experts have been on hand to provide valuations in the grounds of a Scottish Borders castle. The BBC series was filming at Floors Castle just outside Kelso.
Doors opened at 09:30 on Thursday and visitors from across the region and beyond flooded in throughout the day to the site.
Presenter Fiona Bruce said that, in many ways, the people were just as important as the pieces that they brought along to be valued.
“I am not an antiques expert so I am not going to be valuing items,” she said. “What I do know about is stories — what is a good story and how do you tell it? “So much of what you see on the roadshow is about the story behind the item and the story of the owner.
“Our dream combination is great owner, great item, great value.” She added that it was not always about the price attached to the antiques. “We are never short of people bringing along things that may not necessarily have great monetary value but may shed new light on something we thought we did know about,” she said. “I enjoy that part of the roadshow enormously.
