The Daily Thistle — News From Scotland

Saturday 8th September 2018

“Madainn Mhath” …Fellow Scot, I hope the day brings joy to you…. Up a little earlier this morning as I have to go to Malaga which is about a 90 minute drive from Estepona, and which is one of my favorite city’s in Spain and funny enough was just voted as the best city in Europe to live.. for the past year we have been considering moving close to the city, if I was younger I would like to buy an apartment in the Historic area gut all the interior become a modernists … I loved it when I lived in a big city before, you don’t need a car, of course I would have one, everything you need is in walking distance, in the case of Malaga great beaches, fantastic restaurants, cinemas, theater and hospitals, when you get to my age, hospitals are important…So Bella and I did our morning walk to the sound of the cicada’s rubbing their back legs together.. and on that note, I will see what the news has to say about Scotland…

A MAN FROM ABERDEEN CHARGED OVER ‘PIGGYBACK REQUESTS’, we first brought you this news in 2014, then did a follow up in 2016, well, it seems the man must have been let out of prison, as it’s all happening again..the Police in Aberdeen have acted very quickly, they must have put Det Sgt Logan MacRae on the case… A 46-year-old man has been charged after a police appeal about someone asking women for a piggyback while they were out running. The man, from Aberdeen, was charged after “suspicious incidents” in the Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Montrose areas. A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal. Sgt Andy Peerless, of Police Scotland, said: “The information provided to us from the public was vital.” My question is: What did they Charge him with?? The use of an unlicensed “Back” for carriage???

A STAR TREK FILM IS TO BE SHOWN AT LINLITHGOW PALACE TO MARK THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE SCI-FI FRANCHISE….. A message recorded by Star Trek actor Simon Pegg will be played before the screening of 1982’s Wrath of Khan. Pegg plays chief engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott in the most recent movies in the franchise. Linlithgow is the birthplace of the character, played for many years by Canadian actor James Doohan, according to Star Trek script writer DC Fontana. Saturday’s event will be the first time a film has been shown at the 600-year-old palace. Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan, which sees Scotty play the bagpipes, is considered by many Trekkers to be one of the best, if not the finest, of the 13 Star Trek movies. Its director Nicholas Meyer has also recorded a message to be shown ahead of the screening in Linlithgow. About 200 Trekkers are expected to attend… I must admit that I will not be one of them…

VANISHING SAILS IN THE SUNSET….Now if I lived closer I would certainly go a view this.. A film about a disappearing skill of sail boat building in the West Indies is to be given its UK premiere at the Hebrides International Film Festival. Many of those who started the tradition of boatbuilding in the Grenadines in the 19th Century were Scots who settled on the islands. The documentary, Vanishing Sail, will open the festival on 14 September. A flotilla of sailing boats will head into Stornoway Harbour to celebrate the screening. The festival, being held for the third year and running until 17 September, will show films made on, and about, islands at venues on Lewis, Harris, Barra and the Uists. The other films include The Islands and the Whales by Scottish filmmaker Mike Day and French/Danish animation Long Way North, which is set in the 19th Century and follows a young Russian girl’s quest to find her grandfather at the North Pole

NO FAKE NEWS HERE….I want to make it very clear I don’t make any of the news up.. But sometimes I can’t believe the stuff I find myself… A ferret was saved by animal rescue officers after it became stranded on a rock in the River North Esk in Angus. They used a ladder and net to catch the animal which was unable to swim to safety due to fast flowing water north of Edzell. A concerned member of the public had contacted the Scottish SPCA after spotting it on the river. The ferret is currently being cared for at the charity’s rescue and rehoming centre at Petterden. Animal Rescue Officer Coreen Hill said: “The ferret had been seen for three days prior to us being called out on 1 September. “At that time the ferret had been sun bathing and the area had a slight rock formation where he had been sleeping and looked to be under no stress. “Since they can swim I decided to check back in the morning and assess the situation. When Coreen returned on 2 September the rock was surrounded by very fast flowing water. She then asked colleague Ben Soutar to help her rescue the ferret. She added: “By the time I returned with Ben the ferret had woken up and was furiously trying to escape from the rock, but was unable to do so due to the fast flowing water. “We placed a ladder over the rocks and my colleague stretched over to try and encourage the ferret to pop into the net. “After much persuasion the ferret hopped into the net and was moved to safety. He was very happy to be rescued and taken to our centre in Petterden for much needed food and sleep. “We will look after him until we can discover his original owner or find him a loving new home.”

On that note I will say that I hope you have enjoyed the news from Scotland today,

Our look at Scotland today is of Ashley Boat House on the Union Canal on a freezing November day in Edinburgh, taken by Alan Pottinger.

A Sincere Thank You for your company and Thank You for your likes and comments I love them and always try to reply, so please keep them coming, it’s always good fun, As is my custom, I will go and get myself another mug of “Colombian” Coffee and wish you a safe Saturday 8th September 2018 from my home on the southern coast of Spain, where the blue waters of the Alboran Sea washes the coast of Africa and Europe and the smell of the night blooming Jasmine and Honeysuckle fills the air…and a crazy old guy and his dog Bella go out for a walk at 4:00 am…on the streets of Estepona…

All good stuff….But remember it’s a dangerous world we live in

Be safe out there…
