The Daily Tulip — News From Around The World

Wednesday 23rd August 2017

Good Morning Gentle Reader…. A few of those clouds we had on Monday have returned and the stars as Bella and I walk this morning can only be seen occasionally as they poke their sparkles through the gaps…. Humid to boot this morning also, Bella already has her tongue hanging out, she’s like me doesn’t like the sticky weather, on arriving back at the house, she drank lots of water and is now sound asleep on the sofa, emitting snoring sounds…. Yesterday was good in Malaga, all of Sandra’s people she operated on can now see, and my tan improved…

DOCTORS REMOVE LIVE GECKO THAT CLIMBED INTO MAN’S EAR CANAL…. A man who woke up with severe pain in his ear went to a hospital, where doctors removed a live gecko that crawled inside. A video recorded Tuesday at a hospital in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, shows doctors showing off the still-living gecko after it was removed from a patient’s ear. Doctors said the man came into the hospital complaining of a severe pain in his ear that began when he woke up. The doctors said they looked inside the man’s ear and discovered a live gecko had climbed in and crawled into his ear canal while he was sleeping. The gecko was calmed with an anesthetic and doctors used pliers to pull the lizard out of the man’s ear in a five-minute procedure.

WOMAN TRIES TO CASH IN $3,000 LOTTERY TICKET, ACTUALLY GETS $30,000…. An Iowa woman’s attempt to cash in a winning lottery ticket for $3,000 failed for an unexpected reason — her prize was actually $30,000. Allison Pope, 23, of Mason City, said she scratched off her Bonus Crossword ticket from the Iowa State Lottery and was excited to see that she had won some money. “I went home and I was scratching off the ticket and I saw that I had nine words crossed off so I realized I won $3,000 and I was super excited,” Pope said.
Pope said she ran into an unexpected hiccup, however, when she tried to have her winnings verified at a local lottery office. She said the woman at the counter told her that the ticket was worth 10 times the $3,000 prize she had been expecting. “When the lady handed the ticket back to me, I was shaking,” Pope said. “She was like, ‘Are you going to pass out?’” Pope’s ticket was the 40th of 91 available $30,000 top prizes in the Bonus Crossword game. “I’ve always had big dreams of getting a big winner like this,” she said.

ORPHANED FLAMINGO BABY GETS CUSTOM BLUE SHOES TO PROTECT FEET…. A wildlife charity in Singapore shared video of an orphaned flamingo chick taking a walk in a pair of specially-made blue shoes. Wildlife Reserves Singapore posted a video Thursday to Facebook showing Squish, the 2-month-old greater flamingo chick, taking a walk in the blue booties caretakers made for him so he wouldn’t hurt his feet on hard surfaces. The group said Squish was abandoned as an egg and has been raised on a special formula that resembles flamingo milk for just over two months. “Squish loves flaunting those shiny blue shoes! This adorable ball of grey has been the subject of much love and pampering — human carers even custom made Squish a fancy pair of shoes for his daily exercise,” the group said.

STUDENT’S SCIENCE-READY DOG DONS PROPER LAB ATTIRE…. A California college student’s service dog in training is going viral after a classmate tweeted a photo of the canine dressed properly for a chemistry lab. Tara Howard, a student at California Polytechnic State University, brought the dog to the Internet’s attention when she tweeted a photo of the canine wearing goggles and booties during a chemistry lab. “One of my teammates has a dog in her Chem lab.. he’s also required to wear goggles during lab,” Howard wrote.
Twitter users were quick to applaud the canine for remembering to wear “closed-toe shoes” during lab time. The dog’s owner, Cal Poly student Allie Spencer, said “he” is actually a “she” named Annie. She said Annie, who is training to be a service dog, accompanies her chemistry labs on Friday. She said the dog is allowed, but is required to wear the proper goggles — or “doggles.” “In that picture she was actually waiting for me to come back to the table,” Spencer told Buzzfeed. “She stands up when I walk away and waits for me to come back.” “She’s really well behaved,” she said.

SWISS SUPERMARKET INTRODUCES MEALWORM ‘INSECT BURGERS’…. A Swiss supermarket chain announced it will soon start selling an unusual beef substitute — burger patties made from mealworms. Grocery chain Coop announced seven of its locations in Switzerland will become the first stores to offer manufacturer Essento’s Insect Burgers — as well as meatball-like Insect Balls — starting next Monday. Both products contain ground-up mealworms as their source of protein. The bug burgers also contain rice, carrots various spices for flavor. They are projected to sell for about $9.25 for a pack of two patties, while packs of 10 meatballs are planned to sell for the same amount. “They have a high culinary potential, their production saves resources and their nutritional profile is high-quality,” said Christian Bartsch, co-founder of Essento. “Thus insects are the perfect complement to a modern diet.”
Coop said it plans to expand its offerings of edible insect products by the end of the year.
