Only a liberal would whine about the plight of a bunch of millionaires getting paid under a collectively bargained union contract to play a game. The fact is that there is a market level of salary available to the players, and the players have a large voice in determining how that money is allocated among them. The players could to a long way toward getting rid of overpay and underpay by agreeing to pay-for-performance, which they would never do. Or do as one owner once suggested — make everyone a free agent at the end of every year. The players don’t like that idea either. They want guaranteed long term contracts for veterans that aren’t tied to performance, so it is inevitable that some of them will be overpaid and some will be underpaid.
