The name-calling is instructive. If Mr Trump cannot summon enough decency to refrain from such insults on the campaign trail, he is highly unlikely to govern in the interests of those people. Instead he will pursue policies that disadvantage them.
For Donald Trump to insult the parents of a Gold Star solider is terrible in itself. But it’s also a signal to the military and veterans that he doesn’t really care about them or share their values, and he cannot be trusted to have their back, value the sanctity of their life, and not put them unnecessarily into harm’s way. Try shouting “Boohoo” at soldiers who are dealing with a lot more than just sticks and stones.
