Helldivers II Is Reminding Everyone of Starship Troopers, and I Love It

--

“Do you want to live forever?”

I love Starship Troopers. Easily a favorite. A game cast that includes the likes of Casper Van Dien, Clancy Brown, Jake Busey, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Neil Patrick Harris and Michael Ironside? So in. Not to mention the effects have held up well; the story’s great and definitely leans into this side of satire; and Paul Verhoeven directs with a deft hand.

Did I also mention Rue McClanahan (the Golden Girl herself) is in this? The blind teacher. Look for her.

Anyway, it’s interesting because the movie’s popularity is picking up. And why? Helldivers II.

The latest game from Arrowhead Studios has plenty in common with the cinematic classic. You kill bugs. You do so as part of a team where everyone fights, and no one quits. There are epic equipment drops that can kill your enemies if you time them right. You can help your squad in a time of need. And yes, you can salute something while you blow it up with a Hellbomb. It’s perfect.

The game has seen vast player numbers since its release earlier this month, nearing 700,000 concurrent on Steam alone. And that’s not including PS5 sales, to say the least. That means everyone knows what a good time it is. And for good measure, they’re watching the movie as well — or “doing their part,” as it were.

That said, I think Arrowhead has a good opportunity here. Get some Starship Troopers DLC going. Introduce some of the bugs. And for that matter, get Van Dien to portray his role of Rico once more as he leads the soldiers into battle. (Or Ironside’s character — bring him back as well!)

Just an idea, but strike while the iron’s hot. And both Helldivers and Starship Troopers are Sony properties, so it just makes sense.

In the meantime, go enjoy the game because it rocks. For that matter, enjoy the movie as well. Yes, you’d like to know more.

Have a great week, everyone!
