Relax, Godzilla Minus One Will Get a Home Release In the U.S. — Eventually

--

“Watch me!”

Godzilla Minus One has proven to be a massive success. Made for a paltry $15 million budget (or even less!), it has grossed over $100 million at the box office overall. Not to mention that it won an Oscar as well. (I heard Godzilla was a blast at the after parties.)

But there’s been some talk. Toho recently announced that the movie will be released on Blu-Ray in Japan on May 1st with an awesome collector’s edition that features the black-and-white cut (Minus Color) along with a bunch of extras. But…no word on a US release.

Beauty.

Of course, some people are nervous about this, because they’re wondering, “When can I own Godzilla Minus One for myself?” The fact is, we’re getting it, it’s just a matter of time.

Prior to this, Toho released Shin Godzilla, another well received entry in the series that, while not for everyone, certainly entertained. And it did pretty good box office as well, though not as massive as Minus One.

Now, that movie took approximately four to five months to arrive after its theatrical run was done. It did end up in the U.S., however, just a little later after that.

So, yeah, it’s happening. My guess is around the end of summer, or maybe even July, to take advantage of that independent spirit that is Godzilla.

Besides, take a good look at the box office for Godzilla Minus One. It made $110 million and half of that came from U.S. tickets. Toho knows there’s a market here for people that love monster movies, so it wouldn’t surprise me if it got a huge collector’s release in mind for us as well. Day one, baby. You’re talking to a guy that invested top dollar in that Godzilla Criterion collection, and picked up a few digital releases as well.

So, yeah, it’ll come our way. Again, I’m guessing summer, and by then it’ll be worth watching all over again, especially in black and white. Toho has a good idea of what it created here, and wants everyone to enjoy the best kind of Godzilla.

Just give me a release date, guys.

Have a great weekend, everyone!
