Robin8 Bloqbox Hosts Largest Hackathon at Ekiti State University — Lagos, Nigeria
Bloqbox meet-ups and events have spanned the globe in 2019 — one of which was the Ekiti State University Hackathon in Lagos, Nigeria. Hosted by Barineka Maagbo with the support of Robin8, eight teams created their projects and submitted to a panel of judges in the hopes of winning one of the cash prizes. For three days the teams competed and we interviewed the host, Barineka, to share his take on the event:
Q: What is a hackathon and the benefits of one?
А: Well, a hackathon is an event, typically lasting several days, in which a large number of people meet to engage in collaborative computer programming.
The benefits are:
· It brings out new ideas for the company to use and build on.
· It creates more publicity for the company and the brand.
· It makes people know that you have a working team, and also the best team can join the ecosystem and also contribute their own efforts.
Q: Please describe the Hackathon purpose and format:
А: Well the hackathon was a decentralized hackathon to design an unmatched efficiency and transparent ecosystem for businesses and other sector to scale through, and also securing everyone data on the blockchain whether it be songs, articles, photographs, videos, training courses, and much more, and provides an easy way to monetize digital assets. Robin8 worked relentlessly in ensuring that this hackathon will push the boundaries of innovation and make blockchain technology ready for mass adoption.
Q: How did the attendees respond to Bloqbox?
А: Well, they were pretty astonished by the fact that it actually works. They gave it a try and thought it was amazing.
Q: What is your opinion on Bloqbox and Robin 8’s blockchain project?
А: Well to me it’s just a great achievement because like Facebook and other companies, they make money from our data without our consent and sell out our privacy, but with Bloqbox it’s a peer-to-peer network with no centralized entity being able to access users’ information — and the social media network is ad-free which is very appealing. So overall the project is super great with a good managerial team with a focused direction.
Q: Who attended (types of professions, skills, etc.)
А: During our three day hackathon, developers, designers, entrepreneurs, etc. attended to come out with a lasting solution.
Q: Overall result and take away from the event?
А: Well, the result has been amazing with the government having a keen interest; the fintech association of Nigeria was present at the hackathon to see what was going on, and he was really impressed. The participants enjoyed every bit of the event, and they were happy to be part of this great innovation.

Barineka Maagbo is a geologist, but is now in love with cryptocurrencies and the underlying technology behind it. Barineka talks, speaks, eats, and lives crypto. He organizes monthly crypto meetups around the various universities in Nigeria. He also loves music, travel, fun, and ROBIN8!

A decentralized paying system that has made paying more efficient and easy. Paey is a solution not just to schools but we will subsequently target ecommerce industry too. This payment allows customers and students to pay for anything through Æternity tokens.

Second Place: Project name: Kwikjobs
A freelancing mobile application that allows a Smart Contract to manage payments between hiring companies and freelancers.
Third Place: Project name: MovieCoin
A mobile app that allows people discover the most popular movies, buy movies and pay to see movies in cinema using aeternity blockchain.
Fourth Place: Project name: SmartFinance
A Decentralized Microfinance System for MSMEs. MSMEs in Sub-saharan Africa (particularly Nigeria) are heavily dependent on soft loans from the BOI, Commercial Banks or other Soft loans organizations. Due to high interest rates & heavy debt , MSMEs can’t maintain a steady business processes. SmartFinance, is a blockchain based transparent market place where the MSMEs and consumers could implement a co-operative business method. Here, the MSMEs can list the potential products and the expected profits on his business on the distributed public ledger.
Fifth Place: Project name: Monkey
