Quit your job and start traveling whenever and wherever you can
This is the story of why I quit my job at SamKnows to focus on all the things that fall through the cracks while working a 9-to-5. After 18 months it is time to do it all over again.
I currently live in London 🇬🇧 after moving here in February 2016 with my girlfriend. It was the next chapter in our never-ending story to keep life exciting. Before the move I visited for some interviews and quickly got an offer from a company called SamKnows — they dealt with loads of data and still had a relatively small team so I felt I could impact real progress.
But you see, staying in a full-time position was never the plan when moving here from Madrid. If I have learned one thing in recent years though it would be that life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.
Where have I been so far?
I have moved around a bit in the past. Starting in Germany, I moved to Malta (🇲🇹 2010), the Dominican Republic (🇩🇴 2014), Spain (🇪🇸 2014) before coming here. It just appears so that I cannot stay in one place for too long before I get the old Wanderlust again.
So it is time to pack our things again. Where to is yet to be determined but we know that this will likely be later this year. We don’t know how and where yet but it’s likely going to be Malta or Asia.
What am I doing?
Some of you may wonder what I am doing to finance all the traveling. The short answer is that I’m a Web Developer and UI/UX Designer which of course is the easy way if you just happen to know how to code or design.
The longer answer is that I started developing stuff when I was only 13. In the time since then I picked up PHP and JavaScript which I use regularly, as well as UI Design to give my products a professional look.
I spend most of my time working on my own products. Two of the current ones are:
- CoinTrackr.com
A very simple cryptocurrency tracker that works on desktop and mobile devices. It makes it incredibly easy to track the value of your portfolio, particularly if you are investing in things beyond Bitcoin, Litecoin and Ethereum. - VegetarianKeto.com
A vegetarian ketogenic meal planner. Currently in the process of building an email list to test market viability. It’s looking good so I will likely start working on that shortly.
I occasionally also offer my services to clients.
- PHP Development (mainly with Laravel)
- JavaScript development (primarily with Vue.js/ES6+)
- IT Consultations (e.g. how technically viable is your idea)
Get in touch if you have an interesting idea.
What is next?
I am now working on verifying VegetarianKeto.com and adding new features to CoinTrackr. I also want to branch out further into design to improve my UI/UX skills. Some of those case studies will likely be some free WordPress themes, so if you are into that kind of stuff, stay tuned!
Furthermore I want to start creating more. Photos, videos, digital products — you name it. Create good things and do it often. Make new friends, maybe finally pick up my Spanish. Time slows down when you gain back 10–12 hours a day.
Conclusions
In conclusion I guess you can say that I knew this day would come. After going through a lot of progression a very short time it was simply time to hit hit the reset button and start the next adventure.
We are selling our stuff right now in anticipation of leaving London later this year. As usual we’re not properly prepared to do this but I have faith that we will be fine.
I keep trying to tell everybody I know that leaving it all behind and starting something new is way easier than it sounds and is one of the best experiences people should try out while they can. It opens up your world view, develops your character and is likely making you a lot of friends.
Let’s see where the journey goes to this time!
