A Venn diagram for living more purposefully— morning meditation

What is a morning meditation? To help me build a habit of daily writing, I’m publishing a few thoughts here every morning about ideas that interest and inspire me, mostly drawn from ordinary life. I hope you enjoy them.

I created this Venn diagram for myself a few days ago as a way to help me gain clarity on the long-term direction of life.

It’s a variation on the ubiquitous Passion Money Talent Venn diagram, which I was never really a big fan of. I personally find these questions more helpful and illuminating. If the intersection of passion, money, and talent is supposed to lead you to your dream job, I believe reflecting on the intersections of desire, service, and financial need can reveal opportunities for us to live more purposefully, both in our careers and our personal lives.

Note that I speak of intersections (plural), rather than a single sweet spot where all three of these things come together. It’s wonderful when what we want, how we can serve, and our financial needs do overlap, but this isn’t a necessary condition for living a purposeful live. That’s what I love most about this Venn diagram — it shows us that we already have everything we need to live purposefully, whether it’s a talent we can share with others, a skill we’re underutilizing at work, or simply a hobby that brings us joy. It helps us see these things more clearly and spot new ways to actualize them in our own lives.

It occurred to me that if I found this Venn diagram helpful, perhaps others will, too, which is why I’m sharing it here. I’d love to hear your feedback and your thoughts.
