Don’t hold back — morning meditation

What is a morning meditation? To help me build a habit of daily writing, I’m publishing a few thoughts here every morning about ideas that interest and inspire me, mostly drawn from ordinary life. I hope you enjoy them.

Oh, my heart! I don’t even know where to begin today.

As many of you probably saw, someone very dear to me passed away this weekend. My heart is a kaleidoscope of feeling, bright and full and shimmering. And light, as well. Surprisingly light.

Where does this lightness come from? I’ve been wondering. I thought I would feel heavier (though I may yet). That is not to say I am without regret. Losing touch over the years has become one of the greatest regrets of my life.

The best reason I can find is that I left nothing important unsaid. When I found out my friend was dying, I made sure he knew how much he mattered to me. I gave him gratitude and specific memories and did my best to show him all the ways he continues to help and inspire me even now. My words were candid and raw and oh, I was scared to offer them up. I was scared of their intensity. I was scared their intimacy might be misconstrued. Most of all, I was scared of their vulnerability. My vulnerability.

BUT. But. I know it was the right thing to do. As I move now through the many colors and lightnesses of grief, I know.

Our vulnerable places are the strongest, most brilliant parts of ourselves. Don’t hold them back.

Speak the words you need to speak.

Make the offerings you need to make.

Create whatever is inside you that’s been begging to be born since before the day you were.

Tend the flame in your heart till everyone around you can feel its warmth and light.

Crack yourself open and let your brilliance spill out into the world. Let the world spill into you.

Don’t hold back.
