Cuicocha: God’s Lake, that is also a volcanic timebomb

Best known as God’s Lake or “Cuy Lake” as its definition in kichwa suggests, Cuicocha is a volcanic crater lake located in the North of Ecuador, just two hours away from its capital, Quito.

The crater lake is famous for its remarkable landscape, its very unique rituals, a powerful legend story, and a time bomb threat.

But fear not, the truth is, Ecuador is full of timebomb threats. Quilotoa, another volcanic crater lake is also believed to be active and no one really knows when it’s going to explode. Cotapaxi, one of the highest active volcano on earth is under constant activity and a real threat to Ecuador’s capital. There’s also a recent investigation on a mega-volcano called Chalupas, really close to Cotopaxi volcano and a real threat for all planet Earth. Although the possibilities are 6% of reactivation for this century, it is believed that in the case of going active, it would erase all human life from the country.
