Everyone who uses Midjourney constantly knows how hard it is to get images as we originally imagined.

To help with that, I'm running experiments focused on composition to identify what works and the most impactful keywords.

Starting with perspective.

The Prompt

{wide shot, closeup, aerial, selfie, top view} photograph of a young woman sitting on a park bench, overcast day, Canon EF 70–200mm f/2.8L IS II USM — seed 4174580053 — v 5

Baseline

First, I generated an image without the perspective keywords and got its seed number to have a baseline and more consistent results.

Epic Wide Shot

Emphasizes vastness or distance, showcasing the subject within a larger environment

Wide Shot (or full shot)

Typically shows the entire subject placing it in relation to its surroundings.

Medium Shot

It frames the subject from the waist up, balancing detail and context.

Extreme Closeup

Focuses on detail or feature, creating intimacy or emphasis.

Closeup

Highlights the subject’s face or object, revealing emotion or detail.

Aerial View

Captures a scene from above, providing a unique perspective or scale.

Top View

A directly overhead perspective, emphasizing patterns or layout.

Low Angle

Shot from below, it accentuates the subject’s power, dominance, or height, creating a more dramatic visual effect.

High Angle

Shot from above conveys vulnerability or diminishes the subject’s size.

Selfie

Conclusions

  • Midjourney V5 is a lot better for perspective keywords.
  • Add the keyword at the start of the prompt for better results.
  • The standard photograph perspective for a person seems to be a medium shot.
  • I noticed Wide (or long) shots are harder to get. It usually generated mixed results with Medium shots.
  • I'm uncertain about the results for high and low angles. It needs more testing.
  • Sometimes it’s still ignored or has a small impact. Re-roll if needed.
  • It's a great way to have more control of your generation.
  • It also works for illustrations.
