You’re right. But as an Asian American who grew up in Watts, I don’t think it’s bad for a person with privilege to say the truth, which he may have come to in his own way. Sometimes, it takes a person with privilege to get others with privilege to pay attention. If Branch Rickey hadn’t hired Jackie Robinson, when would the color barrier in major league baseball have been broken? What he lacks here is the acknowledgement that black people have been saying those things and not getting attention. Now that you’ve pointed that out, maybe he will start looking for their voices harder in the future and understanding more. And a better understanding is a good thing.
