A Devotional on Psalm 18:1 (KJV)

1 I will love thee, O Lord, my strength.

I find this to be an amazing statement. “I will love thee, O Lord.”

Think of a human being actually addressing the Most High in this way. Who are we to utter such words before the Great Jehovah? The Bible enjoins us:

*Ecclesiastes 5:2 (ESV)
2 Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.

Yet David had such a relationship with God, that he could draw nigh unto Him and make such a powerful vow, “I will love thee, O Lord.”
Think about this statement- who are we that the Holy One would even care, much less need to hear these words.

“O LORD, what is man that you regard him, or the son of man that you think of him?”

What is man? He is a creature made from the dust of the earth who “drinks iniquity like water,” who, it has been written:

*Romans 3:9–19 (ESV)
9 What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin, 10 as it is written:
“None is righteous, no, not one;

11 no one understands;
no one seeks for God.

12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”

13 “Their throat is an open grave;
they use their tongues to deceive.”
“The venom of asps is under their lips.”

14 “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.”

15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood;

16 in their paths are ruin and misery,

17 and the way of peace they have not known.”

18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”

19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

Yet this same God says in His Word:

*Isaiah 1:18 (ESV)
18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord:
though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red like crimson,
they shall become like wool.

*Psalm 86:5, 16 (KJV)
5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.

15 But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, long suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.

The Lord tells us “the very hairs of your head are numbered…ye are of more value than many sparrows.” He says “I will come again unto you,” promising his Holy Spirit to guide and comfort us- that we would be not “comfortless,” which means“orphans.” in the Greek.

Is there anything more pitiful than an orphan? Yet that is what we would be like without the abiding Presence of the Holy Ghost- Jehovah Himself, who said:

*Isaiah 46:4 (ESV)
4 even to your old age I am he,
and to gray hairs I will carry you.
I have made, and I will bear;
I will carry and will save.
God has also promised:

*Proverbs 10:3 (KJV)
3 The Lord will not suffer the soul of the righteous to famish: but he casteth away the substance of the wicked.

*Jeremiah 31:25 (KJV)
25 For I have satiated the weary soul, and I have replenished every sorrowful soul.

And these gracious words from our Lord and Savior:

*Matthew 11:28–30 (KJV)
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

How true the words of Peter that we have not “followed cunningly devised fables,” but rather have these “exceedingly great and precious promises.”

*Psalm 65:4 (KJV)
4 Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.

I am so thankful today that, like King David, I can truthfully and with confidence through the Holy Ghost:“I will love thee, O Lord, my strength.”

Amen.
