Goals for 2014

No resolutions. Real, quantifiable goals.

I love this video from Brian Brushwood, host of Cordkillers and Scam School, because he’s absolutely right about why New Years resolutions are such a source of frustration. It’s easy to talk about things you’d like to do this year, but it’s difficult to get up and do them. I heard a lot of the same sentiment from Brian during the lead up to New Years last year, and since I took his advice and started keeping track of my goals and accomplishments, I’m proud to say I actually completed most of them!

In that same spirit, I’ve decided to post my goals for the coming year, so you can help me stay accountable. These are mostly complete; I may still add a couple or adjust what’s here.

2 — Hearthstone Rank

2 Hearthstone Tournaments

1 Professional Teaching License

1 Masters Degree

3 Speaking Engagements

500 Flipboard Magazine Readers

$0 Long-Term Consumer Debt

3 Months Emergency Savings

$5,500 Retirement Savings (Max)

3 Karate Ranks (Brown Belt)

10 Personal Lift Records

And, one more still under consideration: Some kind of positive adjustment to my diet, in line with my fitness goals. I’m not sure what form this will take yet, but whatever it is, it’ll be measurable and quantitative.

I hope that by posting this, I’ll encourage someone else to get serious about whatever it is they want to do this year. If you do decide to go for it, make sure you keep track of your accomplishments. I keep a note in my shortcut bar in Evernote where I do this, and looking back over it always encourages me and helps me stay motivated.

Now go out and get started!
