Super-store dashboard

According to the annotations in the screenshots, this is how i explain them:

  • (1): This number describes the annotation of different elements such as (revenue, profit, profit ratio and unit sold).
  • (2): This number shows the title chart of the year to year segment performance.
  • (3): This is the measure filter of the year to year segment performance. When you select a measure the title changes based on the measure as well.
  • (4): The is the filter measure of 2018 segment performance. This is a chart representation on sub_category
  • (5): This is the title of measure of each segment.
  • (6): This number explain the data source of this visualization.
  • (7): This annotation is about what the dashboard is all about and who created it.

In this project, i created an interactive dashboard in tableau public to analyze the store performance. I used the approach for the best dashboard design techniques in order to have a professional dashboard. I started with the planning phase, which is about understanding the stake holders needs and pain points in order to know how to design the dashboard. Second, i entered the design phase, which is about considering the graphicacy, chart choice and visual hierarchy. And last, it was the real dashboard that you can see in a screenshot above. It look so much prettier because i practically followed these steps.

Phase 1 and 2: Planning and Designing

After understanding the stakeholder pain points, i did a sketching. Which is about designing on a paper some visualization that can be added in the dashboard. I did it with question to support.

Q1. What is the most profitable City in the State of Tennessee?

Sketche

Q2. What’s the average annual profit for that city across all years in that city?

Sketche

Q3. What’s the most profitable product category in Iowa?

Sketch

Q4. What was the most profitable month in 2018 overall?

Sketch

These are not the only sketches i created, but as you can see, it is the idea of considering the chart types and reaching at the stakeholder pain point. I also created a dashboard example in order to ask for a colleague what they think about the visualization. You can view this dashboard preview here. This is how it looks likes:

Again, though these sketches are here, it doesn’t mean that they will have to be implemented in the dashboard. The sketches are juts here to give me a pointing idea of how better and professional the dashboard should look like.

Phase 3: Design The dashboard

After doing the above duties, the dashboard was much easier to implement and update these visuals in it.

The font hierarchy is presented as follow in the dashboard:

  • The font style for the whole dashboard is ‘Times new Roman
  • The Main title has 22 px as font size
  • The subtitle font size is 16 px
  • The subtitles that categorizes the chart have 12 px as font size
  • The font size of labels and annotations is 10 px
  • Then in the end, the note, author, data sources have 8 px as font size.

As you can see at the top of this reading, the dashboard i designed looks professional and easier to be understood and explained to even people who have never had an encounter with tableau. That the purpose of a better dashboard design.

Thank you again for reading this article. As i said always you can reach me out on LinkedIn or twitter or even comment below as i am happy to hear your thoughts. You can view the dashboard here if you haven’t done so.

Thank you!
