“When you coming home, dad?” “I don’t know when”
But we’ll get together then
You know we’ll have a good time then” —
Harry Chapin

Cat’s in the Cradle, could have been autobiographical. “When you coming home, dad?” was a question often thought … but never asked.

My perception of God had been based on the relationship I had with my father and his father … but this perception changed instantly … when I became a father!

Here’s how it happened.

A man of his time

Dad was never at home. Well he was … but his outside interests took precedent.

There were church meetings, more church meetings, Chamber of Commerce meetings and more church meetings. It may have been a generational thing, mixed with a Northern Irish upbringing.

Dad was a man of his time.

Consequently my father and I weren’t close.
