Objective: go over some of the timeline controls

By understanding these controls, you can efficiently manipulate animations, manage playback, and enhance the overall editing experience. Let’s explore the various controls and techniques to optimize your workflow using Timeline.

On the Timeline interface, you will find a set of basic controls. From left to right, these controls include: navigating to the beginning of the timeline, stepping back one frame, playing the animation, stepping forward one frame, navigating to the end of the timeline, and toggling play range markers. The play range markers restrict where the animation will play, allowing you to focus on specific sections of your timeline.

Next, we have three buttons for different play modes: mix mode, ripple mode, and replace mode.

Mix mode eases the animations when dragging them over each other, creating smooth transitions.

Ripple mode moves all the sequences together, preserving their relative positions.

Replace mode replaces the clip at the drop location, enabling easy swapping of clips.

Unity’s Timeline supports multiple timelines within a single project. You can select from different timelines to work on various animations simultaneously, facilitating efficient management of complex projects.

Holding the Alt key while clicking and dragging allows you to scrub through the timeline. This provides a quick and intuitive way to preview the animation in real-time, without relying solely on the scroll bar.

Use the scroll wheel to zoom in and out of the timeline for better visibility of clips. When zoomed in, press the ‘A’ key to frame all the clips within the visible area. Additionally, with a clip selected, pressing ‘F’ will frame that specific clip, allowing you to focus on its details.

Right-clicking on a marker provides various options, including adding additional frames after the clip and selecting clips. This streamlines the process of managing markers and organizing your timeline.

To remove gaps between clips, select the desired clips, right-click, and choose “Tile.” This automatically adjusts the clips, eliminating any unnecessary gaps and creating a more seamless animation flow.

The Timeline interface includes a curves view that displays the animation as a graph. This view provides a visual representation of the animation’s properties, allowing for precise control and manipulation of keyframes.

To split an animation at a specific point, place the playhead marker at the desired location and press the ‘S’ key. This action splits the animation, allowing for further editing and adjustment of individual sections.
