Recently I was listening to an interview with Eric Greitens a former Navy SEAL who has written a book about mental toughness. One of his techniques for building mental toughness he calls “Segmentation.” It is the idea of breaking down a larger daunting task into smaller achievable pieces. As it relates to boot camp it could be making it to the next meal or making it through the next exercise. Giving yourself mini-goals that you can set out to achieve will help relieve your mind of the larger and longer task.

As a founder of a company you are often faced with similar albeit different fears. Thinking about where you are now and where you need to get your company to can be overwhelming. Instead I have taken to telling myself “one day at a time.” If I can just get to tomorrow I have succeeded. And if I can make today slightly better than yesterday I am winning.
