Beware the Little Foxes!

A mentor’s warning to keep vigilant watch over my life

My first mentor, Solomon, used to say, like the Solomon of old, “Beware the little foxes!”

A trusted Bible teacher and friend, he was quoting from the Song of Solomon in the Old Testament, considered by some to be a love poem between God and his people, as a warning to watch over the details of our spiritual lives to please our lover God. As a single young Christian man seeking my place in the world and, more importantly, in God’s Kingdom, I wanted very much to please God, to learn how to be watchful, to be wise, to grow in the Spirit, to develop a servant’s heart and passion for Christian ministry.

Solomon used this quote often to admonish me and other young men in our Bible study not to be distracted, not to allow our spiritual gardens to be eaten away with the trifles of the world — carnal pleasures such as sex outside of marriage, drug and alcohol addictions, as well as other bad habits of the body and mind that might have gotten us into trouble, made us sick, disabled, dead, or worst of all, an abomination to God, like being gay or a reprobate, essentially anyone who continued to hopelessly refuse God’s love and mercy.
