Australian Men Have Made A Terrible Start To 2016

Your comment ‘This year, Australian men will do more bad things because we haven’t collectively acknowledged the systems we’ve created and perpetuated that enable these things to occur.’ reminds me of that David Foster Wallace speech at Kenyon College [1] [2].

In that speech Wallace says ‘There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is water?”’.

Wallace goes on to say ‘The point of the fish story is merely that the most obvious, important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about…’

Perhaps that somewhat speaks to why progress in this area has been so slow (and why it’s important to keep at it).
