The Cerebral Cortex

Hey there neuro beginners! Welcome back to another post on Neuroscience For Kids! Today, I will be talking about the cerebrum. The cerebrum is by far the largest part of your brain. It is divided into four section: the parietal lobe, the frontal lobe, the occipital lobe, and the temporal lobe. The frontal lobe is involved in motor solving, problem solving, spontaneity, memory, language, initiation, judgement, impulse control, and social behavior.

The Frontal Lobe

The parietal lobe is involved in processing sensory information, such as touch, taste, etc. The parietal lobe also helps in hand-eye coordination and to tell you where your body is in space.

The Parietal Lobe

Third, the temporal lobe is associated mainly with hearing and auditory perception.

The Temporal Lobe

Lastly, the occipital lobe is involved mainly in visual perception.

The Occipital Lobe

Now let’s look at the importance of all these parts of the cerebral cortex. Number one, the frontal lobe. Damage to this area of the cortex usually results in a drastic and sudden change in personality. This is why the frontal lobe is very important. Next, the parietal lobe. Damage to this lobe can result in something called “Gertsmann’s Syndrome”. This is basically confusion between the left and right sides of the brain, which results in trouble writing, doing mathematics, and other logical / analytical daily things.

Left and Right Sides of the Brain

If I was asked, I would definitely say the parietal lobe is the most important part of the cortex. Next up, the temporal lobe. Damage to this area usually results in trouble understanding / forming speech, and trouble hearing. Lastly, the occipital lobe. Damage to this area can result in color blindness, loss of visual perception, and basically it can’t be good for your eyes.

All in all, the cerebral cortex is very important because of the functions of all of its lobes. Thanks for reading guys, if you enjoyed that, leave a clap rating on this post and comment for suggestions. Look out for my next post which will be news about one of the parts of the brain. Later!
