How he does it:The Run Machine,Virat Kohli
In this colossus of a country, there are very few who are born with a silver spoon in their mouths.Mind you ,this is not your conventional ‘silver spoon’.This is the silver spoon of talent.
In the field of sports, especially cricket, countless individuals, blessed with talent, have produced sparks of brilliance, but only to fade away. There have been very few who have been able to channelize their talent into something huge. One such person was none other than the God himself,Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. Though, right now,I would like to focus on his disciple,the-new-king-in-the-making,Virat Kohli.
The rise of Virat has been nothing short of phenomenal.Given his young age and what he has achieved till now,it won’t be long before he emulates the God himself. From a brash, aggressive young captain who led India U-19 to a World Cup victory in 2008,to being the skipper of the senior team across all 3 formats,Kohli has certainly come a long way.His perfect stance, glorious cover drives, domineering pull shots, that hunger to hunt down totals with remarkable ease, are all simply jaw-dropping.What was it that triggered Kohli to push himself to altogether an other planet?
As they say ,behind every great success, there is a failure.Failure actually motivates a person to work hard .So was the case with Kohli.
In the cold and seaming English conditions,he received a reality check on his skills, where he produced a dismal show, not crossing the 50-run mark even once in the 5 tests.James Anderson made his life hell By swinging the ball and producing Kohli’s outside edge every time he attempted to drive outside the off stump. This was in the August of 2014.
Thus the talented Virat Kohli had failed. The media was quick to pounce on him and criticize him for being brash and indisciplined .Many advised him to take a holiday and chill till the media fire calms down. Not Kohli though.
He simply kept his head down and started practicing. He took his problems head on ,by facing almost a mind boggling amount of balls outside the off stump. He improved his stance and his technique. He gained valuable inputs from Sachin and the other former greats. In short,he did everything possible to negate the possibility of a poor show in the upcoming series Down Under.
What the world then witnessed was Virat 2.0.The way he took on the Australian bowlers was an absolute treat to watch.Scoring 4 consecutive centuries in as many matches was no mean feat considering the fast and bouncy conditions which generally have not exactly been a happy hunting ground for Indian batsmen. He proved to himself that he was not there to merely compete, but dominate and win matches for his country.
The next few years were phenomenal for Kohli. Over 900 runs in the IPL, the role of the captain the national team which he has so superbly handled for the past few years,he has become the poster boy of Indian cricket. He is the favorite of all brands and is regularly seen in TV commercials. The change can be seen not only in his batting, but also his attitude. His once animated celebrations have become subdued and he has learnt well not be high headed by his success.
From being a chubby Punjabi boy with a big craving for Chole bhature and parathas,to the fitness freak he is now,Virat Kohli has changed the way the world looks at the Indian Cricket Team. His enthusiasm for fitness is contagious in the dressing room, and it has been instrumental in making India one of the best fielding sides in the world. This man is truly an inspiration for this generation.
Let us take this moment to thank our stars that Virat Kohli is a part the Indian team, thankfully ,instead of being on the other side!!!!
