One of the reasons whatsapp became popular was that it could be use on any device. Remember that in late 2000s-early 2010s blackberry, windows phone, Symbian and others were still an option. The reason whatsapp remained popular during mid 2010s when the IM market exploded and every cat and dog were building one was that it stayed focused. Everyone else wanted to build an entire marketplace and all the apps you’d want on your phone in one single app. Of course it made the app bloated.
That said, with WhatsApp Business, status, Calls, and everything else that’s being added it moving away from that. I’d say Calls might be useful but I don’t see any reason for the new status.
