How To Turn Obstacles Into Opportunities

How many of you have experienced obstacles in your life?

How many of you would like to turn them into opportunities?

I can actually see all the hands raised.

We all have experienced hardships which are like big obstacles in the path of life. My life was no different and I experienced hiccups at every step. So much so that I developed a belief that nothing comes easy in life and my life is full of struggles. While I write this, I am sure most of you all reading this right now may be having a similar kind of a belief system about your life. The more I believed in it, the more stressful life became. I was always a very mediocre and average student and getting good grades in school always remained a far-fetched dream. The statement made by people around me did not help me feel better, rather made me feel highly incompetent when it came to the word success. I started believing that I had no potential in me. This negative thought made my obstacles seem to be even bigger. I never thought that there could be opportunities underlying those obstacles. It took me a couple of years and some really nerve shattering incidences in my life, which made realize that there is always some good hidden in whatever happens. It also taught me that there is ALWAYS some OPPORTUNITY hidden in the OBSTACLE.

A story greatly influenced my belief which I would like to share with you all.

Long time back there was a King who wanted to test his people to see what they do in the face of an obstacle. The plan was simple. He got placed a very large boulder in the middle of the road blocking the entry to the city. He hid nearby and started observing people who passed through that road. He wanted to observe their response to the boulder in the middle of the road, whether they avoided it, tried to come together to remove it or just felt discouraged by looking at it and quit.

Most of the people, who came on that path, saw the boulder and turned away. Some tried to move it but were unsuccessful and gave up. The days kept passing by and the King started to grow disappointed as no one was able to do anything about the boulder. After a few days a peasant came along on his way to the town. He looked at the boulder but did not turn away. Instead after taking a good look at the boulder and thinking how to push it away from his path; he came up with an idea. He went to the nearby woods to see if he can search for something to act as leverage. Finally he returned with a large branch and used it to dislodge the huge boulder from the path. Beneath the rock there was a bag full of gold coins and also a note kept by the King which said,

“The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.”

Our lives have always been full of trials and tribulations. It depends on us whether we turn them into our favor and emerge WINNERS or keep WHINING about them. There is a lot of learning from my own life in terms of changing obstacles into opportunities. Here in this article I would like to share with you all what I do when I see roadblocks in my life. These pointers have always helped me discover my bag of gold coins. I am happy to share them with you. Read the 7 STEPS enlisted below to discover your bag of gold coins.

“The only thing that you have control over is perspective. You don’t have control over your situation. But you have a choice how you view it” — Chris Pine

We always have a habit of viewing things the way we want to. Accordingly how we view an obstacle determines the size of it. By managing our negative emotions when we face roadblocks, we can see the things as they ARE and not as we view them to be. Perception always leads to action. Hence if you develop the RIGHT PERCEPTION, the RIGHT ACTION follows.

“There is always good in everything, if only we look for it” — Laura Ingalls

A coin always has two sides. What appears to be negative from one angle is positive from the other. All the experiences that we have in life which we considered negative have something positive to teach us. Don’t get lost in only one side of the story. Focus on the other side of the story and keep move towards the positive.

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance you must keep moving” — Albert Einstein

Obstacles always appear BIG when you stop and keep looking at them. This gives rise to FEAR. Don’t allow fear to rule your mind. People who treat life with a lot of enthusiasm do not stop at obstacles but keep moving on. This facilitates their WIN. Have the courage to take action — say a YES to life and keep moving on.

“Success is not measured by how high we go up in life but how many times we bounce back when we fall down. It is the bouncing back ability that determines success” — Unknown

Everyone has witnessed some failure in life. There is nothing wrong in making mistakes and failing. But it is our responsibility to get up every time we fail. When we get up, new options are opened which can turn obstacles into opportunities. Whenever it happens to you, just ask yourself — WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? This question will give you new insights about the situation which may result in a breakthrough.

“Success is a process, a quality of mind and way of being, an outgoing affirmation of life” — Alex Noble

A process always provides a way. For whatever problems you come across, take a deep breath and do what comes in front of you and follow it to the next action. Develop a method, convert it into a process which works for you and apply it to situations. Develop a habit of following the process in the face of adversities. You will witness how your problems slowly disappear. This will increase your mental strength and the result will be magical.

“Whatever you hold in your mind on a consistent basis is exactly what you will experience in your life” — Anthony Robbins

Action can be defined in myriad ways. Attacking an obstacle every time may not be the best policy or action. Sometimes a different approach is required. Rather than taking a step forward you may have to take a step back to win. Don’t allow your inner voice to make you feel bad about the situation. Do it with confidence.

“The more you lose yourself in something bigger than yourself. The more energy you will have” — Norman Vincent Peale

Sometimes you get stuck up and are not able to perceive a way out. When such a situation starts to make you feel frustrated and weighs you down, all you need to do is to connect yourself to something which is greater than you. Come up with a PURPOSE which is connected to the lives of the others. It should be for the greater good. You derive a greater strength when you think of other people than yourself.

These 7 steps have never failed me since the day I developed them into a process. They help me WIN the game of life and discover my bag of gold coins. If you want your share of gold coins, get up and start taking action. You will not achieve anything by just sitting there and WHINING. Get up and take action to become a WINNER. Take the help of the steps mentioned above to improve the quality of your life.

Wish you all the best.
