How to Score better in PTE Academic Speaking Read Aloud
Okay, I’m going to start now. Today, as you already know, we are going to discuss the mock test we did last time. Starting with the speaking. speaking is the first section you do in your test. And it comes with five different types of questions. All these questions come in the same order in your test as well. Now talking about how you guys did last time, most of you had a problem with repeat sentence as compared to other questions. Now, you might be wondering, is repeat sentence important? And do we need to focus on this question or not. There are two things to keep in mind while doing repeat sentence when it comes to scoring. First is for speaking itself, repeat sentence is not that important, because in speaking, they focus more on your fluency and pronunciation, the content itself becomes less important. But for listening, if you have been struggling with that, it’s an important question. And if you’re not careful you might be losing your score in listening. So it’s very important that you try to improve your skill in repeat sentence, I could see that almost all of you were struggling to get more than 50% of sentence correct. And if this happens in the test, it’s going to be a trouble, although I know that the questions that you did in our mock test, they are actually a little longer than what you will get in the test but it’s still as much as you can practice and make sure that you can cover more than 50% of the sentence. Now, let’s just start with the speaking read aloud.
Okay, read aloud. So in reading aloud, you can get up to seven questions, five to seven questions in the test you will get more time than shown in here, you get there on 40 seconds to prepare yourself and another 40 seconds to speak. The trick here is in the first 42nd you get you should start reading what we on the screen for example, right now I can see something on the screen. So if this is a real test, what I will do is I would have stopped reading everything I saw you see there so I’ll do this the no homework policy of a second grade teacher in Texas when last week and embrace when parents across the country who lemon the heavy workload off and assigned to your students A teacher or parents, he would not formally assign any homework this year asking students instead it didn’t know their families play outside and go to bed. And now the first thing that I do in the test is when I’m doing read aloud, I start like this, I just read whatever I see on the screen. When doing this. I also focus on making sure that I can pronounce all the words correctly.
But at the same time, if I feel like there is a word which is new for me, or there is a non-English word, there is a word which can be difficult to pronounce. I think about two things can I try to pronounce this word without making a mistake or not? I may or may not. depending on the complexity of the word, I might be able to guess its pronunciation or I may not be able to guess the pronunciation based on what your situation is whether you can guess it or not, You have two options. The first option is ignore the word as if the word does not even exist. Let’s say that I don’t know how to pronounce the word lemon in the second line, then I will simply read like this don’t know Homer policy for secondary teacher in Texas we invited last week and increase from veterans across the country who the heavy workload so you may have noticed that I didn’t even notice the word lemon here. I do not even pay any attention to the word lemon tea is very important because otherwise, you might lose your score in fluency if you start doing something like prepayments across the country who the heavy workload never do this if you’re ignoring the word, don’t try to think about it. If you do that, you will lose your score in fluency. The only reason we are ignoring the word here is that we don’t want to lose the score in fluency in and we in order to maintain our fluency is very important that we shouldn’t ignore the word now, should you be doing this all the time. Of course not. Especially if you’re practising at home or in the class, it’s always important that you learn the pronunciation of the word and use this trick only in the exam. You see what you can pronounce. Think about whether you can guess the pronunciation or not. If you think you can guess the pronunciation then just make a guess. But by no means, you should get stuck there.
But if you think that you can’t even yes it then ignore the word and keep reading.
So that’s what read aloud. Now of course I don’t need to go through each and every read aloud question here because you can already see the sample response in every question if you want to find out how to read this you can simply click on this sample response and listen to the sample answer given here I’m doing going to do this for the first question after this I’ll not do it you know our policy of a second grade teacher in Texas when Ryan last week on increase from agents across the country column into heavy workload often assigned to young student the teacher told parents she would not formally assign any homework this year asking students instead to eat their families play outside and go to bed early.
So you can you can see that the person who was reading this was not a native speaker, any goo you could perhaps guess the internet’s in there. So the accident itself is not important as long as dependencies isn’t as clear as this pronunciation was clear enough to get the maximum possible score okay so if you feel like I’m
if you feel like you don’t have any idea about how to do read aloud then this is the moment you learn this if you have any problem making simply write in the chat and I can answer your question right now I don’t want you to wait until the end of this discussion because this is going to be a really long discussion you might even forget your question so if you think you have any confusion about weeded out let me know right now so that I can explain about those things
then it’s all right I’m going to the next question but please remember that we are doing this webinar and because in the class is difficult for me to spend time with each and every one and I may not be able to ask everyone about their confusion. That’s why I’m doing this webinar so that you can ask me questions privately. And when you ask me a question perhaps you know that these questions are not seen by others so you don’t need to worry about how other people will feel about equation because that’s one of the reasons why most of the people don’t last question because they feel like maybe my question is a silly question I should not be asking it you don’t need to worry about that here you can ask me questions no matter what the question is you can ask me anything okay so I’ve just goes to one got one question here Can we please talk about fluency in intonation and read a lot Okay, Swinson intonation and read aloud now what is fluency fluency is not a speed for example, I tend to speak a little faster but that doesn’t mean that I’m offline than a person who speak slower cleans the only means I’m speaking without interruption or not. If I’m interrupting myself a lot if I’m stammering a lot. If I’m hesitating a lot that is called local currency or bad fluency. I’ll give you one example here. Let’s say that I’m trying to read this what happens if I do this the no common policy of a second-grade teacher in Texas went viral last week earning pray praise from patients across if somebody speaks like this, this is bad for you. Because you can see that the person is hesitating and the person is taking unnatural pose. But on the other hand, if somebody speaks like this, there are no homework policy of a second-grade teacher in Texas we invite last week earning praise from parents across the country or lemon, the heavy workload has an assigned to young students, this is good cleansing. So
older, the person is speaking slow cleans is good, because there are no unnatural interruptions here. And that’s the most important thing. And other important thing is when I try to explain this fact here about the fluency most people misunderstand that they are supposed to pronounce each word separately. If you do that, again, you will get very low score in fluency. What I mean by that is if you read like this, the no homework policy of a second grade teacher in Texas went viral last week you can see every word has been pronounced correctly but the problem is it doesn’t sound natural because when we are having conversation naturally we tend to read out 234 words at a time usually the words which are similar in many that is the reason it’s more important for you to you know look at the sentence see how the sentence has been created and try to read one meaningful phrase at a time so the normal policy of a second grade teacher in Texas when Vita last week earning praise from parents across the country who lemon the heavy workload often assigned young students while doing this also try to stress one word in every block the no homework policy so here I stress normal have a secondary teacher I stress and second went viral last week I went stress them viral earning praise from parents across the country who lemon the heavy workload often assigned to young students. If you speak like this, your intonation will be very good for the test purpose of fluency will also be good. And you’ll also get good score in pronunciation.
And okay, so this is how you do it. You know, if I summarize this, what I’m simply saying is why reading in reading aloud, try to break this and dense into meaningful phrases. Try to read one phrase at a time in every phrase, try to stress on one word, if you’re not exactly sure where to stress, just pick any work. But stress is one word in every block and speak edge as smoothly as possible. If you have made a mistake, correct that mistake immediately or simply ignore it. But don’t start thinking about what to do. Because that will reduce your fluency and you can finish the whole read aloud you in anytime limit you want.
Would you mind to tell me which word we need to put a stress in one phrase? Okay, the answer is you need to you are supposed to stress the most important word. But for many people, it’s very difficult to decide in the test. But what I’m also Sienese as long as you stress in one word, doesn’t matter whether that is important, and not as well, your stress and one way in one phrase one meaningful phrase, you tend to get good score. So rather than worrying too much about which were to stress if you can simply stress anywhere, anywhere that you think is important, it will be enough. So let’s say I’m reading the first part, the no homework policy of a second grade teacher, let’s say this is one meaningful block. Now in this one, let’s say I read like this, the no homework policy of a second grade teacher, this is one way the other person might think secondary teacher is important. So the person might say, the normal policy of a secondary teacher, the other person might think policies, important words. So he might say, the know homeowners policy of a second grade teacher. So these are different styles. It says based on your understanding, although depending on which were you stress the meaning conveyed can be different. But that is not important point here. The important point is, are you able to figure out or are you still mean? Are you at least able to
figure out which word is important in a phrase and a stress on that or not? or change your tone according to that that is a more important point. Okay. So that’s why as much as possible, stressing one word in one phrase. I hope that answers your question. Are there any other question? Otherwise, I’m moving to repeat sentence.
Another question is from start to end, do we need to have the same voice now this is also an important question. And I’m glad that you asked it.
Yes, try to be consistent, we have a tendency of is speaking at a louder voice at the beginning. And then to our stand, our voices start dropping like this, this is bad if I started a very high tone, and then my daughter starts declining towards the end. In that case, I might get a low score in pronunciation.
Now, in normal human conversation, these kind of things are not important. Because being humans, we can easily understand these things. And we don’t tend to focus on the sound I mean level of the sound when we are trying to understand somebody, we just focus on the ideas and meaning and those kinds of things. But for computer, because they rely on measuring certain parameters, if they feel like the voice is dropping, they tend to integrate this in a wrong way. So it’s, it’s really important that you stay consistent if you think you are a person with a softer voice, but you know that your voice is not that soft, that people cannot understand you. In that case, you don’t need to change anything. But don’t try to make it too loud. If you cannot maintain it, if you are planning to speak louder, than make sure that you can stay loud throughout the test. So never do something like this.
The no homo policy of a secondary teacher in Texas when viral last week. So if you start doing this computer things that towards the end, your voice is dropping, which means either you are going to lose a score in pronunciation. Or you might be losing a score in the fluency as well because they set a minimum level of sound to detect and the based on over is what is the intensity of your sound, they set a level and any any sound any any word that you speak out at lower tone will be ignored by the computer. So it’s important that you keep this in mind as well.
Another question I have got here is I’m a bit confused to make a chunk of words, can I decide myself that how much were sued, I need to get in one phrase, although there are certain rules if you think that those rules are confusing, or can be complicated for you, it’s better to break the sentences into phrases by yourself as much as you can try to make sure that the phrases you are choosing are also the important blocks of ideas. But otherwise, at least break the sentence into phrases. Even if you are doing it randomly. If you are doing it, I have seen that people get more score. But if you want to know how to do it properly, then the idea is, is in a sentence the group of words which answer the question like who, what, where, when, why are called chunk of words or phrases. For example, in the first sentence, if I asked who then you’ll say secondary teacher. So that’s a phrase because it tells me who if I asked you what then you and say the know Homer policy of whom have secondary teacher were in Texas, what happened, it went viral when last week, what is the result in praise from parents across the country? So like this, so there is no clear-cut rule for this. But if you keep in mind the questions like who, what? Where then it will be easier for you to get the block of ideas.
Does that answer the question, and it will take you some time to understand this. If you ask me, how did I learn this, then I did not actually learn this by learning any rule I just practised. And somehow it just started making sense as well. So sometimes when I’m reading the same sentence, I break them into phrases. And I do it differently than the other time. For example, at one time, I might read like this No homo policy of a second grade teacher in Texas on viral last week. And the same text when I am reading other time might be like this, the normal policy of a second-grade teacher in Texas when fire last week. So this is just a matter of style. So you might read the same thing in different ways, depending on how you interpret the message. Okay, so there is no clear-cut rule. But as long as you are able to break the ideas into simpler phrases like this, then it will help you to get a better score in the test.
So that’s about reading out. Now, what about the mistakes that some of you made in mock test most often the mistakes you made and read aloud were not the mistakes of pronunciation or the mistakes if Lindsay most often the mistakes you made in read the mock test were missing letters and then like missing SDS at the end of the words or you some cases some of you were stammering as well, the teacher on some of you are speaking like this. If you do this, then you lose a score in fluency. So keep these things in mind and practice as much as you can remember, read aloud is very important for reading as well. So you need to make sure that you are getting the maximum possible score from read aloud This is one of the easiest questions so of course, you don’t want to lose any points in this
