A Deep-Dive Into Tennis Celebrations

Tennis is obviously an individual sport, so when these players end up winning a grand slam title, they can do whatever they want to celebrate. Some of the celebrations range from the classic falling to your knees, to laying on your back, or to just being in straight shock that you won (I call that one the “Andy”).

Below I will talk about each celebration individually:

Fall To Your Knees

Now, I get it, that was Federer’s first French Open to complete his career grand slam, but still. Federer is the greatest tennis player of all-time and he was playing Robin Soderling (who?). Like, he should have just gave a little fist-pump and smile, but hey, I cannot hate on Fed.

Lay On Your Back

Now, the laying on your back celebration is the new big trend in tennis. From Serena Williams, to Novak Dj0kovic, to Federer, to Rafael Nadal, everyone does it.

Djokovic goes to war during basically every tennis match, so it is a tad acceptable for him to lay down and look at the sky and scream. He does it practically every time, and the shirt usually comes off as well, which is annoying, but he is a unbelievable tennis player and athlete.

Serena won her 22nd major yesterday and she fell right to the ground, but she fell to the ground with gracious swag. Like, her fall to the ground celebration could have been in a Beyonce music video (SORRY). But, I think Serena should just do this from now on and forever.

The “Andy”

Obviously, there have been players that have won majors in the past that have been shocked when they won, but Murray winning Wimbledon for the first time in 2013 was amazing for the United Kingdom and himself. His celebration was gold because he was in shock, happy, and he was relieved.

After you shake hands you should pull an “Andy” and go to the crowd and hug your loved ones just like in “Wimbledon” the movie. Stand on the side and just put your arms in the air. You just won a fucking major, get crazy. I would do a lap around the court giving high-fives or have them put on my jam and start breaking it down.

I understand that tennis is a proper sport, but I play tennis and it is getting less and less proper. People on the court are rude, ruthless, and love to celebrate nowadays. It would attract more fans to the sport if you had guys get so pumped up when they won. I want them to act like they just won a grand slam. You just won a tournament with over 100 players and you are going to fall on your back or you knees… Get pumped and dance like Serena or be genuinely pumped like Murray.

Also, the “Andy” can apply to Andy Roddick as well. When he won the U.S. Open in 2003, he was completely shocked and “could not believe it”. He went right up to his coaches box after he won and it was so enjoyable to watch Roddick win the title. Maybe if you win a match in your home country the celebrations are better? Actually, that makes a ton of sense.

Juan Martin Del Potro beat Roger Federer in the 2009 U.S. Open, which was a huge upset and he was definitely allowed to do whatever he wants when he won. Del Potro is a good dude.

The bottom-line is simple when it comes to tennis celebration. Pull an “Andy”, dance like Serena, or do whatever you want when it is your first title.
