Our journey begins in Manado, the bustling capital city of North Sulawesi. As the second biggest city in Sulawesi, Manado is an excellent starting point for any adventure on the island.
The city’s vibrant atmosphere and friendly locals make it an inviting place to explore. One of the highlights was visiting the Tangkoko Nature Reserve, famous for its exotic wildlife.
Located about a one-hour drive from Manado, Tangkoko Nature Reserve offers a breathtaking landscape that is a haven for nature enthusiasts. During our drive to the park, we stumbled upon a unique black beach, formed from volcanic minerals.
This beach, just a five-minute scooter ride from Tangkoko Nature Reserve, was a beautiful contrast to the greenery around us. After exploring the national park, we visited the Kali waterfall, which added an exhilarating touch to our day.
The hospitality of the locals, who invited us for lunch and karaoke, was the perfect end to our time in Manado. And if you have an extra day, a visit to Bunaken Island, known for its vibrant marine life, is a must.
Swimming with Whale Sharks in Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi
Our next destination was Gorontalo, located about ten hours by car from Manado. This journey, though long, was absolutely worth it as it brought us closer to a dream activity — swimming with whale sharks.
The early morning swim was an experience of a lifetime, as these gentle giants glided past us in the clear waters, making for an unforgettable memory.
From Gorontalo, the only way to reach our next paradise was via a ferry. The overnight ferry ride lasted 12 hours, followed by a two-hour boat ride to our final destination.
The ferry to Wakai island departs every Tuesday and Friday at 3:00 p.m., not 5:00 p.m. as often mistakenly mentioned online. It is always advisable to check with locals for updated schedules. Upon arriving at Wakai, you will need to take another boat to the specific island you have chosen.
Discovering the Togean Islands
Next, we set our course for the Togean (sometime written Togian) Islands, specifically Malenge. The journey was long, but as soon as we stepped foot on this island, it rendered us speechless. The Togean Islands are a true hidden gem in Sulawesi, offering pristine beaches and a serene environment.
These islands are ideal for snorkeling, diving, and simply relaxing by the water. The underwater life around the Togean Islands is spectacular, with vibrant coral reefs and a multitude of fish species. It’s a paradise for divers and marine life enthusiasts.
We spent several days exploring various spots on the islands, each more beautiful than the last. The local communities were welcoming, providing us with an authentic glimpse into their way of life.

Adventure in Luwuk, Central Sulawesi and Surroundings
Our journey continued to Luwuk, which was a two-hour speedboat ride to Bunta followed by a three-hour car ride from Bunta to Luwuk. Luwuk is a charming town that serves as a gateway to some of Sulawesi’s most fantastic natural attractions.
While in Luwuk, don’t miss the chance to visit the beautiful waterfall nearby. It was a short 20-minute scooter ride from the town, followed by a brief five-minute hike to reach the waterfall. The setting was like a scene out of a fairy tale, surrounded by lush greenery and tranquil waters.
After enjoying the peaceful surroundings, we started planning our route with a guide for our next and final destination in this travelogue. Although still relatively unknown to many travelers, we were eager to uncover more of Sulawesi’s hidden wonders.
With the help of our guide, we took a public ferry for a five-hour trip that led us to the Banggai Islands.
Serene Escape to the Banggai Islands, Central Sulawesi
Our final stop took us to the Banggai Islands, where we planned to stay for five nights. This remote destination was the perfect end to our Sulawesi adventure. The Banggai Islands are characterized by their immaculate beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and a tranquil atmosphere.
It was here that we found a sense of serenity and peace that was unparalleled to any other location on our trip. The island’s simplicity and the absence of modern distractions enabled us to connect deeply with nature and appreciate the island’s untouched beauty.
We spent our days snorkeling, exploring secluded beaches, and engaging with the local communities.
