It’s actually above the median personal income for all working Americans, which is $30,240 according to the census bureau. You’re probably thinking of median household income, which is $54,462 thanks to the inclusion of multiple-earner families.

In one of those coincidences that probably isn’t coincidence, $40K a year is almost exactly the median personal income for a woman over 25 with a bachelor’s degree (and almost exactly what I gross at my full-time not-writer day job that requires a bachelor’s degree).
