This is all very valid advice, and is something I think about. I have the kinds of savings and escape money you are thinking about, and additionally do the kind of obsessive research into tax and pension systems you might hope I would do. (For instance, thanks to treaty agreements between Italy and the US, I continued to pay into the US social security system while in Italy, rather than the Italian pension system.) I don’t move anywhere without banking the assets (and the paperwork) to move back out. For somebody supposedly adventurous, I have a very low risk tolerance.
