Doordarshan is a self governing public service broadcaster founded by the Government of India,

owned by the Broadcasting Ministry of India and one of Prasar Bharati’s two divisions.It was launched on September 14, 1959 in Delhi on a trial basis with a small transmitter and makeshift.

Doordarshan Channel was established on September 15, 1959.Regular daily transmission started in 1965 as part of All India Radio.It featured a 5-minute news read by Pratima Puri. Later, in 1967, Salma Sultan joined the Sultan as an news anchor.

Krishi Darshan is the longest running program on Indian television’s doordarshna. The program began on January 26, 1967.In 1972, the television service was extended to Mumbai and Amritsar.

In 1972, only 7 Indian cities had television services. At the time, doordarshan was the only television provider in India.

Television service was separated from radio on 1 April 1976. In 1982, Doordarshan became a national broadcaster.

The DD India satellite channel is broadcast in 146 countries.
