SPOCRA 2nd Round Voting
Successful On-chain Voting
We have just moved into the second round of voting (10/2/20–10/12/20) for the founding board of SPOCRA. Now that we are here it is a good opportunity for the community to reflect on how this played out and what made it successful.
The first round voting period (9/18/20–9/28/20) is an excellent example of utilizing a solid on-chain voting mechanism developed by the community— before even Voltaire, Cardano’s voting and treasury system, has been rolled out!
Voter Turnout
The voter turnout from the community was impressive and resulted in a total of 101 valid votes from the 184 eligible voters comprising almost 55% voter engagement as can be seen in the snapshot of the 1st round voting results below.
With increased awareness of what SPOCRA is aiming to achieve for the Cardano SPO community via promotion by the members the voter turnout will most likely increase in the second (final) round of voting.
Check out the founding board finalist candidates here that moved on to the 2nd round of voting:
Fancy New Toy
The on-chain voting was made possible through the development work of one particular SPOCRA member, Adam Dean, sparked by twitter chat that ended with “Hold my beer” setting him to work on a solid voting mechanism.
A few weeks later SPOCRA had the ability to utilize the first real-world, on-chain Cardano voting mechanisms.
Collaboration and Community Efforts
While the new voting tool built by Adam was a major component of what made the 1st voting round successful the other part was the collaboration and combined efforts of the rest of the SPOCRA members.
All the members that had the desire contributed towards the success of the voting in the following ways:
- Validating stake pool operators in the SPOCRA discord server, welcoming newcomers, providing direction and answering questions
- Providing the registered voter ID to allow the validated SPO to vote
- Creating educational and promotional content
- Participating to offer feedback or opinions in the numerous meetings that were held to organize the vote for the founding SPOCRA board
- Extending notification and encouragement to submit a candidate proposal and vote through all of the various Cardano platforms available to them, i.e. Twitter, YouTube, Telegram, Reddit, Cardano Forum, etc.
The SPO community is a subgroup of the overall Cardano community and SPOCRA is a growing collective of SPOs that all came together to make the first voting period a great success. It was awesome to witness and be a part of.
Overall, the level of involvement and engagement within the entire Cardano community is truly incredible. The ideas pouring into project Catalyst with funding being provided to encourage development on the Cardano platform, the road map created by the community to express what we would like to see accomplished by the Cardano Foundation, and now the SPOCRA members pushing the envelope with the successful on-chain voting demonstrates the ability/ readiness of Cardano to become entirely community driven as we move closer to the 100% decentralization point.
SPOCRA Voting Is Even Easier Now!
There are only 8 days left until the second round voting period is over on 10/12/20.
The community has made it incredibly easy to vote now involving only two major steps with the addition of a voter bot to automatically distribute the voter ID after validation; in addition to dust voting or voting scripts that now make it very simple to cast your vote as a stake pool operator.
Follow these two easy steps to vote for the stake pool operators you would like to work towards creating the founding board of SPOCRA:
- Head over to the SPOCRA discord server here https://discord.gg/8h8ZtgG to get validated as a stake pool operator and receive your voter ID from the Voter Bot.
- Go to vote.crypto.2099.io to generate your voter ballot and complete the vote via the “dust” option.
Check out this video tutorial for how to complete the dust vote process on vote.crypto.2099.io.
SPOCRA Fills A Need…
This community formed collective is a great example of skilled and talented people coming together to create a trade organization to represent their fellow SPOs. SPOCRA is one such group that was born out of necessity and surely there will be more to follow as other needs within the SPO community arise.
SPOCRA fills a need that we as stake pool operators, the backbone of the Cardano block chain network now share:
- Strong formalized advocate for SPOs with pools of all sizes with a primary focus on health and security of the Cardano ecosystem as a whole
- Unified voice of collective SPOs with set communication channels to the major bodies within Cardano, i.e. Cardano Foundation, Emurgo, IOHK
- Structured trade organization to serve as a body for SPO education, standards of best practices for proper setup and running of pools with security principles a priority
- Professional collective of SPO community members to offer help and support to each other that all SPOs can be a part of and come to rely on for a single trusted source of information
Your Vote Counts Here
If you are a stake pool operator and would like to be part of deciding which of your fellow community members will take on the responsibility of creating a collective body that will found SPOCRA and drive the first initiatives then make sure to cast your vote on the chain.
Each stake pool operator is given three ranked votes so they are able to choose their top three candidates for who they would like to have serve on the seven member board.
All of the finalist candidates will be good for the board and all bring unique skillsets, ideas, and experience to the table that will help get SPOCRA off the ground. We encourage everyone that wants to vote to check out the candidate proposals — check out the medium post at the bottom of this article “Meet Your SPOCRA Candidates” to learn more about each candidate and how they will carry out the work necessary to benefit the rest of the SPO community.
