I think there is also a disconnect between “these are the rules we live by,” otherwise known as “rule of law,” and the “wink and a nod” version of “this is how it REALLY works.” The former is the realm of the idealist, the “honest” person who if they break a rule they KNOW there is a consequence that will be paid. The latter is the realm of the “dishonest” person who affirms “allegiance” to the rules and actively works to rewrite the fairness out of them to their own advantage. There are lawyers and politicians in both groups.
