1,2 and 3-D BUSINESS ADVICE

One Dimensional

There are many types of advice you get when you are in business. Good, bad, indifferent (not particularly useful to you) Sometimes you need to hear something 4–5 times before it resonates and sinks in. Other times you hear something once and it immediately sets of a light-bulb moment for you. Yes! This is exactly what I needed and have been looking for. Looking is the key.

If you are not actively looking for new ideas, tactics, product lines, improvements then you are far less likely to stumble upon them. This is all part of the closed vs open (growth) mind-set. Why do “lucky” people seem to get more of what they want (Hint: it’s because they were looking more closely)

1-D

A phrase, a quote, a saying. Something that is almost a throw away line. You can like it (yet quickly forget it), ignore it, (wrong time or place) or act on it (sounds right for me). A good example is Jim Rohn’s quote:” You’re the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with”

1-D learning is perfect for a quick bite-sized answer to a problem, spark an idea or to re-enforce something you already believe in and know to be true. A small top up or a boost to your existing knowledge.

Two Dimensional

More in-depth. This could be a blog post, a YouTube video. A paid or free course. Even an industry white paper or a simple content give away. We live in the free information age. Extremely detailed “how to” knowledge that you can easily follow and implement is available at no cost. Implementation is the key. This 2-D learning is like rote-learning, in the fact that it’s often already all set out with little or no deviation. This is the way to do it. Full stop. There is no interpretation or question and answer.

99% of all your business problems have already been solved. It’s a question of finding the quickest path to the best solution for your problem. Like a 2-D image, the information is a little “flat” and often will not give you a holistic or rounded image of the whole problem.

3 Dimensional

3-D is where you get the full picture. Where you get to ask questions, explore more than 1 option. You take in much more information and have flexibility on where this could lead. Just like a 3D image you look at all sides as well as top and bottom.

In a famous experiment when asked to draw a coffee cup 99% of people draw it from the same angle — facing the cup. Only a tiny percentage of people look at the top or even the bottom view. These people see a different perspective of the same object. This allows you to have more fluidity in both the information and the outcome. You evaluate answers, ask multiple follow up questions and try to the find the solution that is most accurate or right for your needs.

Just as you should always be working on your 3 GOALS, short-term, medium term and long term you must also be aware of the mix of your 1-D, 2-D and 3-D learning.

All these options support you overall learning but you need to have a mixture of all 3 if you want better solutions to your problems.
