Quitting The Post Office Before Going Postal-Almost

Moving to a rural county from a city in the 70’s was a leap of faith for my husband, our 2 year old daughter and myself. We planned to run a B&B before that idea became so popular. After a year we quit that idea as it wasn’t making the money we needed.

I put in several applications in a wide range of businesses. My degree was in psychology with a minor in philosophy, not the most employable degree especially in a rural setting. My husband found employment as a high school bus driver.

I was hired to be a rural carrier substitute. With in a few years I became a full time employee with my own route. I was happy for a stable job that provided a livable wage and good benefits.

The day for carriers begins early with sorting the mail into street delivery sequence. At that time we each were required to have our own vehicles. The mail boxes are all on the right and we were required to follow traffic laws and since all cars are left hand dive we had unique ways to drive and deliver the mail, which consisted of siting in the middle of the front set so that the left foot reaches the pedals and the right hand could open the…
