Why I Refuse to Buy One Single Copy of ‘All Over the Place: Adventures in Travel, True Love, and Petty Theft’

I’m hoping the entire online community supports my noble cause.

At MozCon 2016, audience members cringed when I, as the emcee, said (joked) that Moz’s Rand Fishkin was overrated.

I was only speaking the truth.

When compared to his lovely bride, Geraldine, Rand loses out handily.

In fact, I once said to Geraldine that she was like the girlfriend you’re nervous about marrying: You’d be scared her side-splitting humor, charm and overall good-naturedness would flee for the hills after the nuptial.

(Calm down, people: Rand was standing next to her when I said those words; I’m hoping neither of them remember the conversation, which took place during the 2016 MozCon Local after-party.)

My personal Tina Fey

My favorite story involving Geraldine isn’t really a story: It’s the time she cooked me an amazing dinner of pork chops, some kick-butt crispy potatoes that were not french fries and some roasted veggies. Oh, yeah, Rand was there, too, but that’s not important.

I remember thinking, “She really does remind me of Tina Fey.”

That’s significant because Tina Fey is one of my favorite actresses and comediennes. I get her sometimes-corny, always-self-deprecating humor.

Each time I read one of Geraldine’s blog posts, I think of Fey and her dramatic, hysterical antics.

So, in my own head, I started calling Geraldine “My personal Tina Fey.” Yes, I do realize it amounts to reducing her to doll-like/inanimate status.

But you can’t control my thoughts.

Needless to say, I’m a huge Geraldine fan. She’s one of the coolest, kindest, funniest and most generous people I know. (She and Rand share those characteristics.)

Given my feelings for the pair, you likely wonder why I refuse to buy a single copy of her book.

I have three answers for you:

  • I pre-ordered 10 copies of All Over the Place: Adventures in Travel, True Love, and Petty Theft instead.
  • When those books are given away, I will continue buying them in lots of five. Most will be given to friends as gifts, but I’ll also gift them to people I meet who I know need a laugh, enjoy a good read and can appreciate a story told well.
  • I’m a believer in supporting your friends. My Dropbox account is full of strength training and nutrition plans I ordered to learn from and show support for those who’ve helped me along the way. I love giving Rand a hard time, but I can unequivocally say he is one of the most generous people you will EVER meet. I’m convinced he spends more time each day helping others than he does helping himself. The same for Geraldine, who is always championing worthwhile causes.

And if none of that matters, buy some damn books to enjoy a good read and to make some new friends who just might think you’re erudite upon judging your taste in books.

Speaking of doing a smart thing: Now is a great time to pre-order a few copies since Amazon has the book 50% off.
