Places We Visited

Munich.

I was able to experience so much more of Germany by visiting downtown Munich. There were so many shopping centers and stores to visit, as well as cafes and restaurants. The centers were filled with people to, so I was able to see so many different cultures there.

Erfurt.

Erfurt is a town about 1–2 hour train ride from Schmalkalden University, and is filled with exiting places to see and visit. There is a large shopping and dining center in Erfurt filled with familiar stores like H&M and TK Maxx.

Glockenspiel.

The Glockenspiel was a really interesting part of Munich we got to experience. The Glockenspiel is a popular playing clock that plays the times each day in the the building in the town. The clock features numerous figures that move around while the music plays during the hour.

Restaurants

Peter Pane.

The Peter Pane was an amazing restaurant in Erfurt which is about 30 minutes away from Schmalkalden that is based on the story book character Peter Pan. Eating at the restaurant was such an amazing experience since the decor included so many lights, candles, and plants that made the place seem so magical.

Hofbräuhaus.

The Hofbräuhaus is a restaurant in downtown Munich based on Bavarian tavern culture. The restaurant hosts live entertainment with a live band playing music while customers enjoy the delicious food.

The menu surprisingly had a wide selection of food including vegetarian dishes, soups, breads, pretzels, and many other meals. The food was really filling too, and had a unique taste.

Anime Cafe.

While waling around Munich we saw a cafe that had many figures displayed in the window, and we were really surprised to see how the place was decorated on the inside. The restaurants served popular favorites like mochi icecream, bubble tea, and fried corndogs to name to a few.

My favorite part was definitely the TV near the tea line because the cafe played KPOP music videos while customers waited in the line. There was even another wall with what seemed like 100 different Asian movie posters.

Pizza Hut and KFC.

There was a KFC, Pizza Hut and Burger King down the street from the Wombat’s hostel we stayed at in Munich. These definitely unexpected surprises considering that I didn’t expect to see any of these fast food chains in Germany.

The Pizza Hut even had a fancy dining area which was unlike any Pizza Hut I have seen in the United States. The vegetarian tenders I had at KFC even tasted like the KFC chicken I used to have in the states both seasoning and texture wise.

Restaurant at Neuschwanstein Castle.

We had lunch at a restaurant in Neuschwanstein Castle. The castle was amazing, and the restaurant was beautiful on the inside and served fancy foods.

Munich Museum of Egyptian Art.

The Munich Museum of Egyptian Art was a museum we went to that was suprisingly located near another university’s film school in Munich. To get into the museum we had walk down a group of steps that made it seem like the museum was underground, which was a really cool feature for me.

It was a Sunday when we went to the museum so the entry fee was also only 1 Euro which was a pleasant surprise. There was a souvenir shop located in the front of the museum that I was able to get a postcard from too.

Hotels

Opera Hostel.

The Opera Hostel was a jazz and music inspired hostel we stayed at in Erfurt. The decor in the hostel was very beautifiul because the hostel featured real instruments in their decor and paintings of famous musicians on the wall.

Wombat Hostel.

The Wombat Hostel was one of the student hostels we stayed in while living in Munich for a few nights. The hostel was so beautiful on the inside, and decorated with plant decor and lights. There was even a cafe area where we could have a breakfast buffet in the morning.
