Now the sun is shining, you might find the needs of your hair and skin are changing too. Out with the heavier, winter consistencies, and in with lighter moisturisers, sheer finishes, and glowy formulas. If you want to avoid buying a whole beauty cabinet of products, try your hand at some of our simple beauty remedies.

Oil cleansing

It’s important to keep your skin soothed and hydrated during the summer months, particularly when the sunshine can dry out your skin. Oil cleansing is a brilliant way to remove makeup and impurities while restoring moisture with rich fatty-acid based oils.

For this method, you’ll need a carrier oil such as sweet almond, jojoba, or grapeseed. Using circular motions, massage it into the skin, taking care to be gentle around the eye area. Soak a microfibre cloth in hot water, wring it out, and apply the steamy cloth to your skin for 30 seconds. Gently wipe away the oil, and repeat this rinsing and steaming method until all residue is removed.

Dewy foundation

Here’s a super simple tip for glowy summer skin. If you love wearing makeup, but don’t need the full coverage of your usual foundation, there’s no need to fork out for a lighter formula. Simply add a drop or two of your preferred carrier oil for a dewy, natural effect.

Rejuvenating face mist

Facing a makeup meltdown midway through the day? Create a cooling face mist by combining a floral water with a few drops of peppermint oil. For a toning blend try rose water, and for a refreshing one, use orange blossom. Spray on throughout the day to revive and refresh skin — even on top of makeup.

Hair serum

You can make a hair serum with any of your preferred carrier oils. Some of our favourites are coconut — for shine and smoothing, avocado — for moisture and softness, and castor — for adding thickness and texture. Massage from root to tip, and shampoo it out in the morning for best results.

Burn gel

For a gentle but effective burn gel, start with an aloe vera base. Naturally cooling and soothing, aloe helps to rehydrate scaly, sun-damaged skin. For an extra boost, add a few drops of peppermint oil to cool skin, or for a calming formula try lavender oil instead.

Body scrub

Caster sugar works best for this one, but you can also add granulated salt for a rougher texture. Combine equal parts sugar/salt with a carrier oil of your choice. You can even mix in an essential oil or two for fragrance. Scrub away rough skin in the shower, or for a deeper exfoliation, apply to dry skin and rinse off afterwards.

Body glow

Want that summery glow all over? Take your favourite liquid highlighter — powder pigment would also work — and add a little to some sweet almond oil. Apply all over for a nourishing, hydrating radiance that soothes while it illuminates.
