The DevOps Engineering team at Medium is responsible for the systems and procedures involved in the stable operation of the Medium platform. We are committed to implementing the best aspects of DevOps philosophy.

Working closely with Engineering, the DevOps Engineering team creates and maintains the tools used for provisioning services and running releases, as well as the playbooks used to respond to production incidents. In the same vein, we participate actively in the design of Medium’s production systems.

Unlike traditional Technical Operations teams, instead of being first responders, we fill an escalation role in support of a primary on call rotation staffed by members of the larger Engineering team. Collectively we believe this achieves an important feedback function for Medium Engineering. The DevOps Engineering team also takes very seriously a corresponding responsibility to make sure that alerts are triggered for all, and only for, actionable events requiring the intervention of an engineer. Wherever possible we use automation to keep production alerts to a minimum.

Your interest in the Medium DevOps Engineer role will reflect your curiosity, thoroughness and thoughtfulness. Any experience you have operating a user-facing internet service will be helpful, along with familiarity with Cloud services such as AWS. Your on call experience will encourage the empathy we value in supporting the primary on call rotation. You will also find traditional system administration and scripting skills useful in this role.

We understand the value of building a team from diverse backgrounds and respect the healthy expression of different perspectives and opinions. We embrace experimentation and the examination of all kinds of ideas through reasoning and testing. Medium is an equal opportunity employer.
