SMS its inception and forms

SMS is abbreviated as Short Message Service. It is the most common and simplest form of message which is widely passed on various mobile devices across the globe.

SMS is the mother of all message sending modes seen now a days.SMS can be sent with 160 characters to the maximum in each written in English language and some Western European languages and each letter is denoted by 7-bits per character.Eastern European languages, Middle Eastern languages and Asian languages along with certain group of languages require some way around 8 bits or 16 bits per character and hence the maximum words that can be sent are reduced to 140 and 80 characters respectively per an SMS. But there is always an exception with certain mobile phones which do give the option of sending two or more sms at a time with sms chained in a sequence, which gives the option for extending the maximum number of words per sms.

All SMS text message types including 7-bit, 8-bit, 16-bit (Unicode) and long chained messages are supported by IMU (Inertial measurement unit). The next form of messages in the tally are smart messages. Smart messaging was developed by Nokia and it is seen only in NOKIA phones.

Nokia phone users can create messages that have pictures, ring tones, virtual business cards and other types of non-text data, all within a message that is roughly compatible with the SMS text standard with the aid of smart messaging. Further it can be illustrated that although the massages does not contain any kind of text data and are of non-text data yet they make use of the SMS data stream to transfer the message to other phones.

Smart Messaging allows people to do simple picture messaging which is one fascinating aspect of it. While offering the benefits of high simplicity of regular text messages, low cost and quick message transmission is one great benefit of the smart messaging. Low cost implies that there is no extra cost involved to send in these type of messages the user would be charged the same amount as he would be charged to send a normal text SMS. And simplicity is seen on its much easier way of sending in picture messages without any difficulty as the phone user interface provides the needed mode of operation. AT times the characters in the phones could animate and move about in certain models of Nokia and created a better visual experience to the users.

It was further modified with increasing needs and more templates and graphics were incorporated into the phones where in both picture and text message could be sent hand in hand. Soon the trend was followed by other mobile devices manufacturers and even the mobile network operators came up with schemes and offers to captivate the users in the market. Smart Messaging standard for text and picture messages is fully supported by the IMU but discards any other content, such as ring tones and virtual business cards.
