Dogs In Prison!

The title might seem misleading, but this is a truly unique program that benefits so many. Its official name is Dog Training Program or DTP for short. In our 50 states, there are 290 credited programs where inmates are training guide dogs for disabled individuals, veterans, and first responders.

The DTP is training the dogs by inmates in our prison system, supervised by certified dog trainers. An inmate has to meet specific criteria, such as no infraction within one to two years. Then, they are interviewed by accredited trainers to determine their commitment to the program.

The Puppies Training

If selected, the inmates will be given a puppy, and for the next 18 months to two years, the puppy will live 24/7 with the inmate in his cell. Once a month, the certified trainers take the dogs home so they become accustomed to the outside world.
