Coin App UX Case Study

Introduction

Project Brief:

I was approached by a client to design a fintech mobile app for the Nigeria local market which involved money lending with ease. The main aim was to make money lending easy and intuitive so we needed to create an MVP.

Objective:

The objective was to design the app to be minimalistic, uncluttered and intuitive right from the onboarding screen to the user dashboard.

The collection of user data from onboarding had to be simple, less overwhelming and intuitive.

Responsibilities:

  • User research
  • Persona creation
  • Wireframes
  • UI Design
  • Illustration/logo design

Tools:

Figma

Research

Surveys:

I conducted a user survey to prove my hypothesis and gain user insight. To reach a larger audience, I wrote a short, 5-question survey and posted it on online communities and Twitter that matched the user profile. I received 8 responses.

Results:

  • 85% said they do take a loan once in 5months. So that means there are many users applying for loans frequently.
  • Over 60% of the people said they are worried about high-interest rates. This maybe can be addressed by building a marketplace for loans to get competitive rates.
  • 55% of users depend on offline channels for taking loans.
  • The research made it evident how different users would use the app differently.

User Personas:

Based on the online user research conducted, we set up two personas. I referred to them throughout the entire product development process.

  • Each persona had a scenario that identified a realistic goal the user might have when working with the app.
  • The information about each persona focused on its goals and frustrations with the product as well as their interaction with it, which drastically affected my design choices.
  • This process has significantly influenced the development of important design decisions and key functionalities.

Design

Low Fidelity Sketches

I usually start the design process with low-fidelity sketches. This is the way I iterate through many design options quickly.

  • The main purpose of me doing low-fidelity sketches are to quickly iterate and brainstorm ideas.
  • For this app, I made a couple of iterations.
  • I went on to choose the version which had a minimalistic approach.

Wireframes

At the beginning of my design process, I created wireframes for testing purposes. I had a list of screens to cover all scenarios and then I started to do grayscale wireframes to detail out the flows.

UI DESIGN

Once I tested out all usability mistakes, I started designing the final screens in Figma.

Key takeaways:

After a few more iterations, I designed the final screens with Figma. My aim was to deliver a clean, minimalistic, modern look that helps users fulfill their goals quickly.

What have I learned from this project?

  • Research is a must — I couldn’t have designed a product users love without the help of the people who will actually use it. The user survey revealed unexpected information and made it possible to adapt the product to the user’s needs.
  • Personas are powerful — Being aware of user’s needs and pain points helped me to create a seamless, end-to-end experience.
