Design Refinement

Working out the details.

Issues: how to not make the table fall over. This was resolved by turning the top two pieces of timber around to brace the table. I also lowered them so that the table top, which sits on top of the frame in the balsa model, sits flush with the frame.
Cutting list involving 8 x the same size pieces of timber.

Next time I am going through the design phase, I would experiment with the limitations and possibilities arising from the chosen material much more. I would experiment with the material and explore how it can be shaped, move, grow, the grain — this would have solved issues but also allowed for a potentially more ambitious design, despite the intentions to keep this simple and give the appearance of one continuous surface as originally intended but in a different way, as indicated by the sketches below.

Next time the design stage would be, sketches / precedents / materiality research and exploration, touching, cutting, testing / design and concept sketches, considering ergonomics and functionality, potentially designing it for my house as this table is designed to sit next to my (embarrassingly badly put together pallet) bed frame.
